T is for Truth

“My father was a writer. You would’ve liked him. He used to say that artists use lies to tell the truth, while politicians use them to cover the truth up.”

The idea of truth was behind the movie in a way that the government manipulated the truth so that the people would believe and only know what the government wants them to know.

Throughout the movie we see the government trying to cover up the truth from the country and it’s people.  During the event in which V took over the news station and the cops ended up shooting an innocent, the government told the news to make it out to look like the cops shot the real V and didn’t mention that it was an innocent they killed.  V tried to expose the idea of truth through words and actions, the thing is that he hid his truth from the rest of the world.  It’s almost like V is trying to uncover the truth about its corrupt government to the people when he is doing the same as the government and covering up the truth about himself.  It seemed as more people started to side with V in recognizing the corrupt government, we learned something new about his past and who he is.  In the end we see the truth about V just like the people see the truth about the government to which they stood up against in rebellion.

I like how you chose truth – or lack thereof – as your dominant impression from the movie. For cinematic purposes, I felt that the producers of this film, as you mentioned, correlated the unraveling of V’s past with the gradual reveal of the British government’s horrific history. The quote “the truth will set you free” is clearly evident in this film. After the government’s horrific wrongdoings were exposed, the British people finally gathered together to overthrow this infrastructure and created something greater for themselves.
