Every hero has characteristics that are similar to other heroes. But every hero is unique because of certain traits that they get from events, their genes and everything in between. The terms we’ve talked about in class, from hamartia to hubris, apply to many tragic heroes. Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio) fit this role in Inception. He has a ton of hubris, which leads him to try the risky mission into multiple dreams, but it was because he knew of his skill. Once he found other, well-versed guys to help with his mission, his confidence (and essentially his hubris) rose as well. That made him superior to the average man, something many tragic heroes are. One of the biggest flaws, or hamartia, with Cobb is related to his hubris, through his gambling and riskiness. He has so much hubris that he thinks he can do everything, and everything by himself. He kept trying and it eventually led to the death of his wife. It gets the best of him sometimes, but it also makes him stronger because of his confidence. The catharsis is a little different in this movie, but it’s towards the very end when Cobb sees his kids. This changes his mindset: he can relax and not worry about taking risks anymore.

I agree with your classification of Cobb as a tragic hero. Even after viewing this movie twice and still not being able to explain it without sounding like a babbling fool, I do remember Cobb hedging his bets because of his pride. I just wanted him to stop spinning that top but he couldn’t because he was determined and prideful. In looking at a lot of the posts, I see a common theme in that hubris often leads to hamartia, just as you discussed with Cobb.
