Image Manipulation–Color Correction–Filters and Effects

1. Color/Tonal corrections (brightness/contrast, levels, hue/saturation, etc.) Contributed by Seth, Maddie & Ben

These controls are found under: Image → Adjustments -Brightness/ Contrast (play with scale)

– Levels (histogram)

– Curves (play with curve to adjust tone & color) More intensive and can lead to weird colors

– Exposure (play with scale)

– Vibrance (play with scale). Make a scene seem brighter and more exciting

– Hue/ Saturation (play with scale)

– Color Balance (play with scale for RGB & CMYK)

Better used on an image as a whole

2. Image adjustments (image size, canvas size, cropping, transformation, etc.) Contributed by Audrey, Ashley & Katrine

– Image Size: You can adjust the height and width and overall file size and resolution by clicking Image → Image Size. The effects are global to your whole file.

– Canvas Size: The image size stays the same but you can alter your workspace (canvas) size by going to Image → Canvas Size. The effects are global to your whole file.

– Cropping: Highlight a selection, then click Image → Crop, it will crop to what you selected.  You can use the 5th tool down in the toolbar to follow the rule of thirds or go to Image → Crop to follow your own guidelines

Trim: You can trim an image by clicking Image → Trim →  choose what location you want to eliminate- note this is very general and you cannot choose size specifications

Free Transform: When the layer is unlocked, you can manipulate the image size (width and length) by dragging the corners of the image. Edit  → Free Transform

Transform: Warp uses handles like illustrator to distort image with curves. Distort manipulates the corners of the image individually. Perspective changes the angle of the view.

3. Blurs (gaussian, motion, radial, iris, etc.):
Contributed by Sarah & Catherine

Filter → blur

– surface blur, smart blur (looks like a painting)

– field blur, gaussian blur, lens blur, shape blur (blurs image (you can adjust blurriness)

– radial blur (focus in middle, spin blur around)

– motion blur (blurs in a direction, looks in motion)

– box blur (blurs with small squares)

– blur, blur more (slightly blurs image)

– average (takes average color of image and fills entire space with it)

– tilt-shift (you have control over the area which it blurs (linear))

– iris (you have control over the area which it blurs (radial))

4. Distortion effects (+ puppet warp):
Contributed by Jack, Kimberly & Emma

Puppet Warp:
Step 1: Change background layer to layer 0.
Step 2: Select an area of the photo you would like to distort.
Step 3: Drop pins where you want the image to stay in place.
Step 4: Click and drag to distort the image.

Distortion Effects: Displace

– Pinch- Warps the picture like a tunnel view

– Ripple- Makes the picture have waves and a ripple effect

– Shear- You can bring the left side of a picture to the right side. (The image is pushed to the opposite side for this to happen)

– Spherize- brings the image closer in a sphere shape

– Twirl- Blurs the image into a spiral

– Wave- adds waves to the image/can affect the length and amplitude of the wave

– Zig Zag- Pulls the grid underneath it into zig zags, putting that filter on the picture

5. Filter gallery (artistic, brush strokes and distort)
Contributed by Danielle, Dakota & Amanda

Filter>Filter Gallery…>Artistic

– Effects that can make image appear to be a painting, sketch, etc.

Filter>Filter Gallery…>Brush Strokes

– Similar effects as Artistic. Give image a brush stroke appearance.

Filter>Filter Gallery…> Distort

– Give effect of having a screen or glass in front of image.

– Magnitude of distortion can be adjusted and manipulated.

*** You can make individual selections of your picture and apply the filter to just that one part of the picture.

6. Filter gallery (sketch, stylize, and texture)
Contributed by Amanda, Emily & Caroline

Filter>Filter Gallery>Sketch

-Effects allow for users to make the pictures look like a chalk, charcoal. Each effect can be adjusted a different way.

Filter> Filter Gallery>Stylize

– Effects allow for the pictures to be glowing edges. The edge brightness, edge width, and smoothness.

Filter>filter gallery > texture
