Advice from an Elon Senior: It’s a Marathon, Not a Sprint

Claire Bonnell ’14 was one of our Winter Term interns this past month. As WT ends and she is about to begin her last semester at Elon, she took some time to reflect on her experience but also provide some advice for high school students as they go through the college search process.

As I look back on my internship with the Office of Admissions, I consider this past month to be one full of growth and new lessons.  I have improved my public speaking skills, traveled to different places and met people at Elon that I otherwise would never have known. What stands out to me most is the commitment of the Elon staff. They take time to know their students and are passionate about helping others. Not a single student attends a presentation or tour, or applies to Elon without getting the attention they deserve. While it is always a celebration to find a student that the office knows will succeed at Elon (and who chooses to enroll), those who will not be a Phoenix are respected and cared for all the same.

My advice for the college search process? Remember that this is a marathon, not a sprint. I remember my own college application experience and how urgent everything seemed. I suggest making a plan with realistic goals and sticking to it. Personally, I have observed so much unnecessary concern and urgency that can be remedied with smart planning and time management.

At the end of sophomore year, begin to think about what you are looking for in your future college or university. Pick a few different types of schools to check out. Think about location, public/private, large/small, their academic profile and possible programs offered. After viewing a few schools, you should be able to determine what aspects are most important to you in terms of location and size. From there, you can narrow your list even further based on your possible academic interests and career goals in junior year to see if those schools on your shorter list match up.

Once you decide what schools you are going to apply to, choose the appropriate application deadlines and plan accordingly. Be sure to research scholarship and financial aid deadlines. Waiting until the week they are due will create unnecessary stress. Get to know your counselors at both your high school and at the colleges you are applying for. Having a face to your name will help on both ends. Be thorough and thoughtful with each question you answer. Know that you are capable and smart and that what is meant to happen will. Be truthful to who you are and what you can both give and receive from the colleges you are considering. College admissions offices will consider your grades, test scores, interests, extracurricular activities and the person you are. When they decide to admit you, they are honored just as much as you are. Remember that! Your future college/university will be your home for four years so take time to think about where you fit. Being comfortable is so important. Trust your judgment.

Time seems to go by so fast so taking advantage of opportunities and working hard to reach your goals. Enjoy each day! Take a deep breath, it will all work out and one day you will be in my shoes, baffled that in a few short months, your entire collegiate experience will be complete.

Welcome to our Winter Term Interns for 2014!

January is here and that marks the beginning of Elon’s Winter Term! Winter Term is the opportunity for students to take 1 class, work, complete one of the five Elon Experiences, or stay home if they really choose to (Although 98% of students complete a winter term each year). This winter term, the admissions office is lucky to have 3 interns: Claire Bonnell, George Guerrero and Peter Kesaris. This internship is meant to give them a quick snapshot of life in Elon’s Admissions Office. While the majority of their time will be spent on the road traveling with admissions counselors for our Evening with Elon programs, they also have learned a little about the application reading process, perfected their presentation skills and lived a day in the life of our staff. We hope you will enjoy meeting them on the road as much as we love having them in the office. Without further ado, here they are!

Claire Bonnell ’14

Claire Bonnell

Hi! My name is Claire Bonnell. I am a senior from Charlotte, NC studying Theatrical Design & Production with a focus in costuming. Additionally, I have a minor in Entrepreneurship. While at Elon, I have been lucky enough to study abroad twice. I visited Europe in 2012 to study the Holocaust during winter term. In 2013, I studied Microfinance in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

From my balance of textile discovery and design work with my study of Entrepreneurship, I have developed a passion for the Fashion Merchandising industry. Though that specific major is not available here at Elon, I feel fortunate that I have had the support of my advisor and other professors to take what I have learned in the classroom and apply it to a career path I am invested in and want to be a part of. This past summer, I participated in our Elon in NYC program and interned for Brooks Brothers’ Black Fleece Collection in the merchandising department. This experience was wonderful because I was able to learn firsthand and develop the skills truly used in this arena. I consider myself so lucky to have gotten the chance to do this.

Here at Elon, I love getting to see a wide range of opportunities. I have gotten to be involved in numerous areas of my interests that have been tied together through experiential learning. I have been able to discover through Leadership and Service as well as my newest endeavor, undergraduate research with textiles/fibers. Besides all that Elon has to offer educationally, I love the location of our university in NC. We get to see a few snow flurries a year but have a long and warm spring!

I will soon be headed to Vienna, Virginia to meet interested students. After, I will be headed to my hometown, Charlotte. I am hoping my Panthers (Including Cam Newton & Luke Keuchly!) will still be in the playoffs and I might get to see some Queen City hype for football! I cannot wait to meet students and parents and am thrilled to share all that Elon has to offer!

 George Guerrero ’15

George Guerrero

Hi all! My name is George Guerrero and I am currently a junior at Elon. I am an International Business and Marketing major with a concentration in Professional Sales. I came to Elon from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, right after my sister graduated from Elon in May 2011.

Last summer I had the chance to work for Plaza Lama, the biggest department store in the Dominican Republic. Throughout my internship, my responsibilities included the supervision of employees as well as surveying customer experience when shopping at the store. I conducted a total of 300+ individual interviews with customers. In campus I work at the Spanish Center where one of the main responsibilities as a Student Assistant is to recruit and to maintain students interested in what we the Spanish Center has to offer.

Throughout my internship I will travel to Atlanta, GA; Morristown, NJ; Raleigh, NC and King of Prussia, PA. I am excited about each event and can’t wait to meet and share my Elon experiences with all of the prospective students.

Here are just a few other facts about me:

Favorite thing about Elon:  The Elon Community! There is such a strong sense of community involvement that it really feels like a family.

Favorite Hobbies: I enjoy working out, playing basketball, dancing and hanging out with my friends.

Favorite place to eat in Elon: The Root, I really enjoy the Mozz Burger. I am also a big fan of Qdoba and Biscuitville!

Favorite TV show: Game of Thrones is the best TV show ever.

Best Elon Tradition: College Coffee

Favorite quote: “You will give yourself peace of mind if you perform every act of your life as if it were your last.”

 Peter Kesaris ’14

Peter Kesaris

Hey everybody! I am senior at Elon from Gaithersburg, MD. I am a Political Science major with minors in Leadership Studies and Criminal Justice Studies. I am looking forward to traveling to Towson, MD; Morristown, NJ; and King of Prussia, PA this winter term.  During these trips I will be speaking about my Elon experience and meeting prospective students.

I have had the opportunity to study abroad twice while at Elon. I spent a summer in Assisi, Italy, where I learned about the Italian language, culture and the legacy of St. Francis. Then I spent a semester abroad in the Sunshine Coast, Australia where I learned about their criminal justice system and modern racism.

Sometime during my travels I became very passionate about social justice issues. I used this passion to write numerous research papers about gay rights in America. I was ultimately able to start a panel dedicated to discussing local, national and international issues related to LGBT rights.

At Elon, I am a leadership fellow and in the LEAD program. On top of multiple leadership workshops and classes, I have had the opportunity to travel to Chicago and Cleveland and study co-ops, non-profits and community activism.

Because of these experiences, I was able to land an internship with a DC-based non-profit called ‘Helping Educate to Advance the Rights of the Deaf’ (HEARD). With this internship I sat at the table with community leaders, lawyers and government official and advocate for the rights of deaf people who were navigating the criminal justice system. I was even able to testify in front of the DC council on behalf of in-person visitation rights for deaf prisoners.

During my time at Elon I have been involved in starting two different organizations: Relay for Life and a fraternity. Relay for Life is a walk-a-thon dedicated to raising money for the American Cancer Society. I am currently serving as the Director of Recruitment and this year we are hoping to raise over $75,000! Also, I was a founding member of Delta Upsilon fraternity. My fraternity allows me to participate in numerous service projects but also has four key principles that I really believe in: The Promotion of Friendship, The Development of Character, The Diffusion of Liberal Culture and The Advancement of Justice.

All together I am very passionate about the opportunities Elon has given me and I look forward to sharing these experiences with others.

Affording an Elon Education

Funding a college education is an investment for families. Our office wants to help make sure our students and families have the resources they need to plan for an Elon education. Here’s a blog post providing a quick overview of merit-based and need-based aid at Elon to help navigate the college search process.

Merit-Based Aid

  • Presidential Scholarship: Presidential Scholarships of $4,500 annually are awarded to approximately the top 15 percent of entering first-year students each year. The awards are based on the student’s academic profile. No separate application is needed. Scholarships are automatically awarded to students who meet the necessary criteria when the completed admissions application is reviewed. Presidential Scholarships are renewable each year pending acceptable academic performance. Students find out of if they are recipients of this scholarship when they receive an admissions decision from the university.
  • Elon Engagement Scholarship: The Elon Engagement Scholarship is an award designed for promising students who embody the spirit and values of the university. Every first-year applicant will be a candidate for this $3,500 scholarship, which is renewable annually. In addition, each recipient will be given a one-time $2,000 grant to be used for an approved Elon Experience or project. The admissions committee utilizes the student’s essay and extracurricular resume as the primary factors for consideration of this award. Students find out of if they are recipients of this scholarship when they receive an admissions decision from the university. Click here for more information on Elon Engagement.
  • Fellows Programs: The Elon Fellows programs are selective, four-year programs that offer academically talented students exciting advantages like special courses, guaranteed internships, paid research assistantships, faculty mentoring, grants for study abroad and Fellows scholarships. The amount of money awarded varies depending on program, and not every Fellow will receive a scholarship. However, any scholarship received can be combined with the Presidential or Elon Engagement Scholarship if applicable. The Fellows application is a separate application from the first-year application and is located here. You do not need to be admitted to Elon in order to apply for Fellows, but you must have submitted a first-year application to be considered. The deadline for the Fellows Application is January 10, no matter which deadline the student applies under.

Need-Based Aid

Elon asks for 3 documents in order to be considered for all available need-based aid:

  • FAFSA (application for federal aid)
  • CSS Profile (application for private colleges and universities)
  • Elon Aid Application (application for university-based money)

A great way for families to gauge if an Elon education is within reach is to utilize our Net Price Calculator. This is not a guarantee of aid, but it provides an estimate of what need-based aid a family may receive from Elon. Please remember that information received via the Net Price Calculator is based on the information entered by the individual.

Another need-based aid program we offer is the Watson & Odyssey Scholars Program. The Watson and Odyssey Program, which is part of The Center for Access and Success, was created as a means of assistance for students poised to take advantage of an Elon education but for whom this possibility might not be an option for financial reasons. Students selected for the program are recipients of a number of prestigious, endowed scholarships. To see if you might qualify and to apply, please go here.

Students should apply early for need-based aid! This improves your chances for receiving the maximum aid for which you are eligible. We give priority to applications which are complete in our office for review by mid-March. To meet this deadline, you should complete and submit all applications and forms no later than mid-February. Aid packages cannot be released until all required documents are complete and received.  No first-year student will be awarded aid until the student has been accepted for admission to Elon University; however, you should not wait until you have been accepted to apply for aid.

Here’s a timeline and more information if you want to apply for need-based aid. If you still have questions about need-based aid, please email finaid@elon.edu.

General Things to Know about Financial Aid and Scholarships

  • Elon is consistently ranked a “Best Value” institution. Please review the bottom line as you compare college costs.
  • Our aid can be combined. For example, a student could receive a Presidential or Elon Engagement scholarship in addition to a Fellows scholarship. If need-based aid applies, this could be added as well.
  • We allow students to receive third-party scholarships. In fact, we encourage it! This money can be used to help fund an Elon education.
  • Students who receive a Presidential Scholarship cannot receive an Elon Engagement Scholarship (and vice versa). Students are also not guaranteed one of these scholarships at the time of admission. Students can be admitted to the university and not receive either the Presidential or Elon Engagement.
  • Tuition & Fees for 2013-14

Holiday Party at the President’s House

As the holiday season is in full swing, we like to remember all of the wonderful traditions that the Elon community celebrates this time of year. The Festival of Lights and the Holiday Party at the President’s House are just a few of the many reasons we love our community. The following blog post was written by Elizabeth Bushelow, Elon graduate of the Class of 2012 and former university guide recalling her favorite Elon memory.

Elon around the holidays is beautiful, with lights decorating the central part of campus and an entire night where luminaries line the sidewalks and students gather to celebrate the holiday season.  Elon is full of fun and wonderful traditions that students look forward to each year, like the luminaries, but in my opinion, none are quite as fun or exciting as the holiday reception that President and Mrs. Lambert host at their home each year.

President Lambert and his wife for all Elon students host the holiday reception, which occurs each December.  Each year on the night of the reception, students line the hallways of our Moseley Center anticipating the short bus ride over to the Lambert’s house.  Among the attendees this past year was our very own phoenix mascot – I was lucky enough to ride the bus to the Lambert’s with him.  After arriving at the Lambert’s, all the students greet Mrs. Lambert and are welcomed into the home.

My favorite part of the night is getting in line to have my photo taken with President Lambert.  All students can get their photo taken with President Lambert.  President Lambert, complete with a Santa hat for the photo, waits for students in his home’s library.  Students have the opportunity to also wear festive hats – including, but not limited to elf ears, Santa hats, and snowflake headbands.  The best part about the photo?  It gets sent home in a holiday greeting card.  As the night goes on, the line for photos grows and extends around the driveway outside – it is a popular tradition!

Students then have the rest of the time to hang out and enjoy themselves.  There are appetizers and food for everyone and punch as well.  If the weather is as beautiful as it was this past year, you can even sit outside on the back patio and enjoy the mild December weather.  Or if the winter decides to strike in early December, you can sit in the living room and join in singing Christmas carols.  Students can leave at their own pleasure.  Vans and buses back to campus run frequently.

It is always exciting to open the holiday card with your photo with President Lambert while you are at home for winter break.  It’s a reminder of a fun and relaxing evening spent at the home of the Lambert’s.  The holiday reception is my favorite Elon tradition because it is unique and different than traditions at other universities. After all, who doesn’t want to spend an evening, dressed in their business casual, hanging out with fellow classmates at the gorgeous house of our university’s president?

Getting Involved at Elon: Making Friends & Finding Family

Elon’s organization fair is coming up this Friday and in honor of one of the biggest events of the fall, it seemed fitting to post an entry by a current student about an organization on Elon’s campus that has changed her life she found at the organization far that has shaped part of her collegiate experience.

When I headed eight hours away from home for college, I expected to learn, to grow and to be challenged. I already had an amazing group of friends at home, and even though I was excited to meet new people at school — I never imagined meeting people who would become my best friends.

But that’s exactly what happened.

But it didn’t happen right away. The transition to college life, just like anything else, takes time. Friends can be found anywhere and everywhere freshman year, but for me, some of the most meaningful relationships I made were through finding others who share in my passions, interests and beliefs.

I’ll always remember my first Org Fair — Organization Fair, that is. Every fall, more than 200 student organizations set up tables outside the Moseley Student Center and talk to students about joining their organization. If you do it right, you’ll end up signing up for a lot of emails, eating a lot of free food and hopefully honing in on two or three groups that you genuinely want to be a part of. Going to the Org Fair and getting involved was the best thing I could have done for myself freshman year.

I first heard about Elon’s chapter of Intervarsity, a college campus ministry, that day at the Org Fair. For one reason or another, I never attended a Tuesday night meeting until the first day of the spring semester. Let’s just say that first meeting was a good one, because I’ve hardly missed another since.

Intervarsity is like a family to me. It’s a place to laugh, to learn, to grow, to be challenged, to be poured into and to pour into others. I got involved in IV’s mentoring program where an upperclassmen girl and a freshman girl are paired together as “Mama Shark” and “Baby Shark,” I met incredible people, joined a small group and as my freshman year came to a close, I signed up for the spring retreat.

Spring retreat takes place every year in the mountains. The first time I went was a beautiful and relaxing weekend of hiking, laying in hammocks, hanging out with friends — and going on spontaneous adventures. I’ll never forget my freshman year spring retreat because one of our good friends decided it would be fun to forego our warm cabin and sleep outside on our last night — on top of the mountain. I’ll never forget that hike: it was about midnight, in the pitch dark, a group of fifteen college kids following behind a guy with only a cell phone light to lead the way up the side of a mountain.

When we finally made it to the top we were surprised to find an open shelter in the middle of a clearing. We made a fire and sang campfire songs before falling asleep beneath a sky full of stars. It was cold, but it was worth it. When I look back on my time in college, I know these are the moments I’ll always remember, with people I’ll never forget.

– Katy Steele ’14

Katy is a University Guide at Elon and originally from Centerville, Ohio. Right now, she is a Journalism major with a minor in Spanish. Her favorite thing about Elon? The amazing people she’s met who are helping her to grow into the person she’s meant to be!

2014 First-Year Application is Live!

Without further ado — The 2014 first-year domestic application is now live! Please go to this link to learn more information on how to apply to Elon.

For a quick sneak peek, here are this year’s essay questions. Remember, you only write about one of the topics – so choose your favorite!

1. Describe a place that has meaning to you and discuss its importance in your life. Explain how this place has influenced who you are today.

2. If you were given $10,000 to invest in a project you are passionate about or a business you want to start, what would it be and why? Who would benefit and how would you spend the money? Be specific about the goals you hope to achieve.

3. Throughout its 125 year history, Elon has benefited from strong, forward-thinking leaders. Leadership is highly valued at Elon and is one of the five Elon Experiences. Describe a time in your own life when you demonstrated leadership and discuss what you learned about leadership from that experience.

Essay topic required for Gap semester program applications only:
Why do you want to participate in the Gap Semester Program? What contributions do you think you can make to the group and the program. What do you hope to learn from the experience?

Featured Counselor of the Week – Kaitlin Carlin

Kaitlin Carlin is our featured admissions counselor of the week! There is more to her than just her admissions responsibilities (which include territory management, working with our campus visit program and supervising our guide event staff). She was a former tour guide herself, loves Elon and has a major sweet tooth (we don’t hate it). Enjoy!

Hometown: Williamsburg, Virginia

Graduation Year: 2010

Territory: Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont. I also work with our campus visit program and guide event staff.

Major: Strategic Communications; concentration in International Communications and Advertising

Favorite thing about Elon: Our passion and community spirit. Elon students are involved in academic activities, clubs, and sports not because they have to be, but because they are genuinely EXCITED and passionate about those things. There is such a strong sense of community involvement that it really feels like a family. You support each other’s events, engage in meaningful academic exchanges, and collectively fall in love with Elon – each in your own way. What more could you ask for from a university that will be your home not just for four years, but for life?

When I’m not working, where can you find me? I love cooking and trying out new recipes, so you might catch me in the kitchen. Otherwise, if it’s nice out, you’ll find me doing something outside (reading, relaxing, working out, being on the water). If I could have an outdoor office, I would!

Fun Fact: I studied abroad in Denmark and would do anything to go back. Jeg elsker Danmark!

Favorite place to eat in Elon: Colonnades dessert bar. What can I say, I have a wicked sweet tooth! Off campus, I love The Root. I may or may not be in love with their fried brussel sprouts…

Best thing about my job: I think there is something really intriguing about the transition from high school to college; it’s a very new and exciting time in someone’s life. I enjoy counseling students through this period of change, but I have to say that sharing in a new acceptance to Elon is absolutely the best part. There’s a really raw mix of excitement and nerves and relief and anticipation that I think we all can relate to, but I get to experience it firsthand with each student coming to Elon. The thrill of knowing they have four amazing years in front of them, and that I had some hand in it, is an incredibly gratifying feeling. As an alumna and first generation college student, there is a deep sense of pride in welcoming another into our phoenix family.

Favorite TV show: I’m slightly ashamed to admit I’m a sucker for the Bachelor/ette series and any of the Real Housewives…but on the flip side, I LOVED the “Hatfield’s and McCoy’s” series on the History Channel. I like a mix between mindless reality TV and meaningful documentaries/movies.

Favorite quote: Ever heard of or seen “The Holstee Manifesto?” Google it.
