Elon’s New Work Out Plan

Six days into Vietnam, and I finally got a day away from the city of Hanoi. Following Mother Hailey’s lead, fourteen of us took a chance and booked a day trip to Hoalu and Tam Coc. Fortunately for us, the promised experience was far from a scam.

The trip started off at 8:00am with a two and a half hour bus ride, during which time we were led to a tourist trap. The main attraction of the store was an art work shop where you could see artists, not painting, but threading beautifully detailed pictures into cloth. Their artwork was displayed all around the shop walls and on a center table. Prices ranged from $13 for a small 8 x 10 picture, to $500 for a poster sized master piece. The painting I wanted had unfortunately cost $200, but I was given sufficient time by our tour guide, Zainz, to seriously consider dropping some bills to help the victims of Agent Orange.

We then traveled to Hoalu to see temples from the Dinh and Le Dynasty. The temples were even more spectacular than I had imagined. It is slightly challenging to remember details from this location because my camera died while uploading pictures onto my computer last night, resulting in a loss of 20 of the 75 pictures from the day trip.

The following location was Tam Coc, where we ate at a buffe styled restaurant. The group had some mixed reviews about the food. Luckily, the best part of the trip was just to follow! A boat trip down a Vietnamese river in open fields and into dark caves, all surrounded by the mountains unlike any other in America, is an experience I will never forget. The caves were incredibly mysterious, considering it was pitch black inside them. Head lamps on our row masters’ heads guided our eyes to crystals and dripping rock ceilings. The best part of the trip was the upper body work out CJ and I received thanks to the insistent requests of our elderly row master to help her row. Below is a snap shot of our boating experience; you can see to the left a second group of tourists who took the safer approach to boating with life vests.

Just when I thought Vietnam could not be anymore beautiful, I was proven wrong with a biking tour along the country side from Tam Coc to the Bich Dong Pagoda. The scenery was breath taking, as was the experience of attempting to not fall off our bikes on the rugged terrain. Helmets would have been preferred. Here is the crew:

Heading back to the hotel, Zainz led us yet again into the same tourist trap we had already visited. This allowed the driver a chance to “wash the van.” And so I was forced to reconsider investing in the $200 masterpiece for an additional 20 minutes. In the end, I got a once in a life time experience for just $29, some country side serenity, and an exhausted body.
