How the least-savvy girl found her way to a tech-savvy blog

Welcome to my first blog post!

My name is Stephanie and I’m so excited to be writing for Elon’s Technology Blog, though I never expected to find myself here. Read on and find out why!

Who I Am

Since I’m new here, let’s cover the basics:

  • I’m Canadian (yes, I do say ‘eh’ from time to time)
  • a sophomore Honors Fellow
  • an International Business major
  • a Francophone learning Spanish and German
  • most importantly, a lover of all things pink, cute, or sugary

What I’m Doing Here

I’ll be contributing to the Writing with Thumbs blog series. I get to play with fun iPad and iPhone apps that help us become better students, learners, and writers. Then, I’ll share my experiences with you! I never expected to write for a technology blog. Why? I’m the opposite of a tech wiz. Consider the following: it took me …

  • 1 week to configure a SmartTV
  • 2 months to sync an iPod
  • 8 months to learn the difference between a text message and an iMessage
  • 18 years to get Netflix (Just kidding. I still don’t have it.)

Why I’m Blogging

My lack of tech prowess considered, you might be wondering why I’m involved in this blog. It started like this: I was finishing my first year at Elon and realized I had taken barely any classes related to my major. I had a choice: give up language courses forever, or take online business courses throughout the summer. I chose the latter. Heading into this online course – Business Communications – I was uneasy. This was my first time taking an online course. Besides, I knew I preferred pen, paper, and face-to-face interactions over powerpoints and readings. Online Bus Comm turned out to be the most engaging course I have ever taken at Elon. Everything about this purely technological course, from the live seminars, to recording my own screencasts, to blogging with my classmates, was stimulating and useful. The online course altered how I think about my future, and even what career paths I plan to pursue.

Body language abroad presentation

My favorite project of my online course was creating and recording a screencast. Mine was about how businesspeople should alter their mannerisms while working abroad. I loved it! You can check out my video here.

So, when the opportunity arose to participate in Writing with Thumbs, I jumped at it! I’ve experienced the wonderful ways in which technology can help us learn. That single online course transformed me into a better writer and student. I want to share this experience with other students, and continue to explore how technology can be used as an educational tool throughout our university years and beyond.

When and Where I’ll Be Blogging

I’ll be blogging from a sweet single room in Elon’s Global Neighborhood where I live and work as a Resident Assistant. You can expect a post from me once a month until the end of the school year. I can’t wait to get started!

iPads away!

  1. Awesome post and welcome to blogging.

Did it really only take you 2 months to sync an iPod? Because I just threw mine out after 6 🙂
