Dan Harder presents at premiere IT educator’s conference
Mr. Dan Harder, the Director of Campus Technology Support and Assistant CIO, recently represented Elon at the Miami 2016 Connect Conference for EDUCAUSE: the leading nonprofit organization for those seeking to ‘advance higher education through the use of information technology.’ In addition to leading two of the main stage speeches Harder was also a part of the team responsible for conceptualization and execution of the entire conference. This is the third year that Harder has spoken at EDUCAUSE and the first that he has been on the planning committee.
As the man in charge of keeping technology on campus running cohesively, thinking ahead to what new technology Elon would like to implement, and ensuring that Elon is still meeting it’s sustainability goals, Harder has a lot on his mind. He’s connected to all things tech on campus, and manages to run a tight ship through various methods of leadership and data analysis. These are the exact subjects that he was asked to present on at this year’s EDUCAUSE Miami conference – one of a few smaller conferences held by EDUCAUSE that was attended by about 600 professionals.
A conference of this size brings together colleagues that are all involved in the IT industry of higher education. It’s here that professionals can trade ideas, compare results, and inspire others – something which Harder managed to do repeatedly, not only bringing Elon onto the national stage during his speeches but also successfully leading a discussion (rather than a lecture) on methods of effective leadership.
Harder believes that his involvement in these kind of events is a necessity, not only for his own professional development but for the future of Elon. With Elon trying so many new things technologically (including, he mentioned, our very own Maker Hub! [LINK]) it’s beneficial to have a network of colleagues to soundboard off of and – in his words – “to make sure he isn’t crazy.”
