Canon copiers replacing Ricoh copiers

Posted on: November 11, 2015 | By: Ryan Gay | Filed under: Tech Tips

In October, Canon UnitCampus Technology Support began replacing Elon’s Ricoh copiers with new Canon Image Runner Advance copiers for faculty and staff use. All copiers will be transitioned to the Canon copiers by the end of November. Read on for more information about what Canon copiers offer, how they differ from Ricoh copiers, and on general use.

Benefits of Canon copiers

Canon copiers offer a variety of benefits that Ricoh copiers do not. For instance, sending documents to the Canon print server will allow you to print from any Canon copier on campus, much like the Print Management Stations used by students. Canon copiers print at 35 pages per minute, ten pages more than Ricoh copiers. Furthermore, Canon copiers keep your documents secure by requiring you to either swipe your Phoenix Card or enter your Elon email username and password on the login screen to access your print jobs.

Another benefit of Canon copiers is that users can order their own supplies and place their own service calls directly with Canon for free.

What’s the difference?

There are some key differences between Canon copiers and Ricoh copiers. Here are the major differences:

  • Users may not use Canon copiers with generic accounts. If you have student workers who need to use Canon copiers, please contact the Technology Service Desk. Please note that students will still need to login to the computer with their own username and password, and not a generic account.
  • You can send multiple documents to Canon copiers and print them all at once, saving you trips to and from the copier. Documents sent to Canon copiers are kept in your own print queue for 10 hours before being purged from the system.
  • Canon copiers cannot fax documents. If you need to fax a document, you should scan and send the document to yourself, then fax the document using the RightFax utility. A RightFax number is not required to send faxes, but the software utility is.

Using Canon copiers

The Canon copiers have multiple functions that faculty and staff may utilize. Users can scan and send documents via email, copy documents, and print documents sent to the Canon server. For more information, visit our Canon Image Runner Advance wiki page with documentation on installation and use. For further training, check out Canon’s eLearning site. Please note that to register, you’ll need the Serial Number of the Canon copier in your area (located on a sticker above the copy plate).

If you have questions about using Canon copiers, or run into service issues, contact the Technology Service Desk at 278-5200.
