{"id":472,"date":"2012-02-28T15:45:21","date_gmt":"2012-02-28T20:45:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.elon.edu\/technology\/?p=963"},"modified":"2012-02-29T14:42:50","modified_gmt":"2012-02-29T19:42:50","slug":"teaching-courses-online-myth-vs-reality","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.elon.edu\/teaching\/2012\/02\/28\/teaching-courses-online-myth-vs-reality\/","title":{"rendered":"Teaching Courses Online: Myth vs. Reality"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.elon.edu\/technology\/files\/2012\/02\/mythbusters-title-page.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1016\" style=\"border: 1px solid black; margin: 5px;\" title=\"mythbusters-title-page\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.elon.edu\/technology\/files\/2012\/02\/mythbusters-title-page.jpg\" alt=\"Mythbusters logo\" width=\"352\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a>Cheri Crabb and Ben McFadyen, academic technology consultants in Teaching and Learning Technologies (TLT), and Victoria Shropshire, an English instructor, led a \u201cmyth-busting\u201d session about teaching online courses at the Lilly South Conference in Greensboro earlier this month.<\/p>\n<p>Their session addressed some of the common questions and concerns that faculty have in teaching online, provided guidance on ways to overcome those concerns, highlighted some of the benefits of teaching online, and showcased the ways that TLT collaborates with faculty to build and adapt strong, effective online courses.<\/p>\n<p>Some highlights of the\u00a0session included:<\/p>\n<h2>Creating an effective course<\/h2>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>During the session, some instructors were afraid that an online class wouldn\u2019t be as educational or interactive as a face-to-face class. An online environment can still have the engaged, hands-on learning and the sense of community that Elon classes provide. Cheri recommends developing coursework and assessments that emphasize making applications and synthesizing rather than memorization.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.elon.edu\/technology\/files\/2012\/02\/DSC069721.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1019\" style=\"border: 1px solid black; margin: 5px;\" title=\"Victoria Shropshire\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.elon.edu\/technology\/files\/2012\/02\/DSC069721.jpg\" alt=\"Victoria Shropshire presenting\" width=\"219\" height=\"201\" \/><\/a>New online faculty ask if most assignments and tests transfer easily to the online environment. \u201cWhile you can do that, it\u2019s more effective if it\u2019s massaged for online,\u201d said Cheri. \u201cFor example, if the assignment was to summarize research articles and post to the discussion board and then discuss in class, modify the assessment so that it has analysis and synthesis components to discourage cheating and encourage student reflection and connectivity to materials.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Blogs and discussion forums can help build comfortable, supportive class discussions online.\u00a0 Cheri suggests using ice-breakers in an online forum to help students know that they can access each other.<\/p>\n<h2>Overcoming concerns<\/h2>\n<p>The conference session also addressed faculty concerns about teaching online, and modifying a face-to-face course for a new environment.\u00a0 Creating or adapting an online course initially is time intensive, but once the course begins (unlike face-to-face) the majority of work is completed.<\/p>\n<p>Some faculty are also concerned about using advanced technology online. Online courses can be delivered and managed through simple technology. However, those who are proficient with <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.elon.edu\/technology\/files\/2012\/02\/DSC06971.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1017\" style=\"border: 1px solid black; margin: 5px;\" title=\"Presenting\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.elon.edu\/technology\/files\/2012\/02\/DSC06971.jpg\" alt=\"Ben and Victoria present at conference\" width=\"310\" height=\"167\" \/><\/a>more sophisticated programs can easily implement them into an online course.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStick with technology in an online program that you\u2019re comfortable with,\u201d recommends Cheri.<\/p>\n<h2>Benefits of teaching online<\/h2>\n<p>On the plus side, Cheri said, faculty can \u201cteach anytime, anywhere, even in your pajamas!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Teaching an online course requires extensive preparation<ins datetime=\"2012-02-28T14:10\" cite=\"mailto:kreimer\">,<\/ins> but less of a time commitment once the course is launched.\u00a0 For those who are proficient with more sophisticated technology, it\u2019s easy to incorporate Skype, blogs, wikis, social media and more into an online course.<ins datetime=\"2012-02-28T15:00\" cite=\"mailto:kreimer\"><\/ins><\/p>\n<h2>Interested in teaching online?<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.elon.edu\/technology\/files\/2012\/02\/DSC06968.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1020\" style=\"border: 1px solid black; margin: 5px;\" title=\"Ben McFadyen\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.elon.edu\/technology\/files\/2012\/02\/DSC06968.jpg\" alt=\"Ben McFadyen presenting\" width=\"300\" height=\"201\" \/><\/a>Teaching and Learning Technologies works closely with faculty to adapt courses for the online environment.
