Savanah Gilbert: The Beautiful Bo-Kaap (Photo Blog)

Bo-Kaap is one of the oldest cities in Cape Town. Along with it’s vibrant colors, this quaint city also has a long, unique history. Most of Bo-Kaap’s oldest residents are descendants of slaves brought over by the Dutch in the 16th and 17th centuries. Once slavery ended, positive changes began happening to the area of Bo-Kaap. Today, the community has played a huge role in shaping the culture of Cape Town. Bo-Kaap is home to a large Muslim community that is an area of religious freedom. Our time in South Africa has been rich with history and I think this town demonstrates some of the struggles that South Africa, as a country, has overcome.
