Posted on: March 7, 2018 | By: wrodgers | Filed under: Pediatric Functional Status Scale

The above information was reviewed. No new updates available at this time.   Article Summary: Pereira GA, Schaan CW, Ferrari RS. Functional evaluation of pediatric patients after discharge from the intensive care unit using the Functional Status Scale. Revista Brasileira de Terapia Intensiva. 2017;29(4):460-465. doi:10.5935/0103-507X.20170066.   The objective of this article was to evaluate the functional status of pediatric patients after discharge from an intensive care unit using the Pediatric Functional Status Scale. The study compared the Pediatric Index of Mortality 2, time spent on mechanical ventilation, and length of stay in the pediatric intensive care unit between patients with different levels of functional impairments. This was a cross sectional study with 50 participants. 60% of the participants were male and the median age was 19 months. The evaluation done with the Functional Status Scale was done on the first day after discharge from the pediatric intensive care unit. The…

The previous information was reviewed. No further updates were found available at this time. Article Summary: Bennett TD, Dixon RR, Kartchner C, et al. Functional Status Scale in Children with Traumatic Brain Injury: A Prospective Cohort Study. Pediatr Crit Care Med. 2016; 17(12):1147-1156 The objective of this study was twofold. First off, the researchers wanted to describe and assess changes in children with traumatic brain injuries (TBI) in the intensive care unit (ICU) using the functional status scale (FSS). This change was to be assessed from baseline function which was attained on admission at one of the two, level 1 pediatric trauma centers participating in the study. Secondly, to examine correlations between the FSS and age, mechanism of injury, exam/imaging, and known outcomes for children 0-18 years old who had sustained a TBI. Inclusion in the study was limited to individuals admitted to the ICU with a diagnosis of acute…

All information in the last post is up to date. However, I have added some things that were not included. Pediatric Functional Status Scale UPDATE I. Descriptive Information A. Target population and age:Pediatric hospitalized patients, used for large pediatric outcome studies II. Psychometric Characteristics A. Type of information, resulting from testing: predict current function, morbidity, and mortality. Scores of 6-7= good, 8-9 = mildly abnormal, 10-15= moderately abnormal, 16-21= severely abnormal, more than 21= very severely abnormal B. Discriminative: very good with moderate and severe dysfunction C. Predictive: predictive of morbidity and mortality Article: Pollack MM, Holubkov R, Funai T, et al. Simultaneous Prediction of New Morbidity, Mortality, and Survival Without New Morbidity From Pediatric Intensive Care: A New Paradigm for Outcomes Assessment. Crit Care Med. 2015;43(8):1699-709. The purpose of this article was to test the idea that morbidity affecting functional status was associated with physiological dysfunction in the PICU…
