Article title:

Relationship between segmental trunk control and gross motor development in typically developing infants aged from 4 to 12 months: a pilot study

Purpose:

The purpose of this article was to assess the correlation of the development of segmental trunk control with the development of gross motor development in children between the ages of 4-12 months.

Study Population/Methods:

There were 20 infants with an average gestation of 39 weeks and a 1:1 ratio of males:females. In order to participate in the study, the babies needed to be born at or after 37 weeks gestation and with no adverse histories as reported by their parents or family doctor. Subjects who were known to have congenital abnormalities were excluded from this study. The babies were tested monthly using the SATCo (Segmental Assessment of Trunk Control) as well as the AIMS (Alberta Infant Motor Scale).

Results:

There is a correlation between segmental trunk control and gross motor development after 8 months of age. The development of trunk control similar to the traditional cephalic to caudal development pattern.

Strengths/Limitations:

One limitation of this study is having a small sample size of 20 participants considering the number of babies being born each year. One strength of this study was the decision to have one individual complete all testing, creating a high intra-rater reliability.

Conclusion:

There is now preliminary evidence showing a developmental trend of segmental trunk control and upright static control developing faster than active and reactive control. There is a need for concurrent training of upright trunk control and gross motor skills for infants.

What interesting findings! However it makes sense to train in less challenging stable environments and then progress reaction skills of the child.
