The article I chose to review was entitled, Reliability and Validity of the Turkish Version of the PedsQL 3.0 Cancer Module for 2-7 Year Old and the PedsQL 4.0 Generic Core Scales for 5-7 Year Old: The Hacettepe University Experience. The article began by giving an in-depth explanation of the phrases Quality of Life (QOL) and Health Related Quality of Life (HRQOL) and their meaning in reference to the physical, social, and mental aspects that make up a patient’s life. The article continued by stating that HRQOL assessments specifically are used to derive the influence of a disease/treatment on quality of life. One such HRQOL assessment is the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL) that includes differing versions based upon diagnosis as well as a generic module that can be applicable to the age ranges of 2 to 18 year old. The PedsQL can be taken by the patient themselves, or the patient’s parent which is also known as a parent proxy-report. This article specifically focused on the reliability and validity of the PedsQL 4.0 Generic Core Scales for 5-7-year old and the PedsQL 3.0 Cancer Module for 2-7 year old. Both of the aforementioned tests have been validated in multiple languages, but until this study the Turkish language was not one of them. The participants totaling 74 (43: 2-4 y/o and 31: 5-7 y/o) were all from the Hacettepe University Hospital and were between the ages of 2 and 7. Both tests needed to be translated into the Turkish language and assessed to see if any cultural adaptations needed to be made. After multiple blind translations and prefinal tests, it was determined no such adaptations were needed. All aspects (scoring and set up) of both assessments were left the same after translation was completed. In this article reliability was determined by using Cronbach’s alpha for internal consistency and the intraclass correlation coefficient(ICC), and the validity was assessed by using the comparison of the two tests and measured using Pearson’s correlation coefficient. The outcomes from the Turkish translated versions of the PedsQL 4.0 Generic Core Scales 5-7 year old and PedsQL 3.0 Cancer Module 2-7 year old using the aforementioned measuring criteria showed an excellent to fair correlation between the scales, a very good correlation between parent-proxy report and patient self-report in both tests. It was noted in the article that some values pertaining to each of the measuring criteria to determine reliability and validity although above minimum standard were a bit varied, the authors attributed this variance to small sample size and cultural aspect of removal of children from school once diagnosed with chronic diseases. In the end the article concluded that the two Turkish version assessments in this article, the PedsQL 4.0 Generic Core Scales for 5-7 year old and the PedsQL 3.0 Cancer Module for 2-7 year old are deemed to be reliable and valid and may be used as outcome measures within the Turkish population.
