{"id":1658,"date":"2015-04-20T10:38:27","date_gmt":"2015-04-20T14:38:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.elon.edu\/pericleanscholars\/?p=1658"},"modified":"2015-04-20T10:42:37","modified_gmt":"2015-04-20T14:42:37","slug":"periclean-scholars-induct-class-of-2018","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.elon.edu\/pericleanscholars\/2015\/04\/20\/periclean-scholars-induct-class-of-2018\/","title":{"rendered":"Periclean Scholars induct Class of 2018"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1 class=\"display\">Periclean Scholars induct Class of 2018<\/h1>\n<h3 class=\"display\">With a focus on Zambia, 32\u00a0freshmen\u00a0will spend the next three years taking classes that culminate in a project of\u00a0social change as part of a program aimed at developing in students a deep sense of global citizenship.<\/h3>\n<div id=\"article_body_content\" class=\"display\">\n<figure class=\"inset span-3\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"first\" src=\"http:\/\/www.elon.edu\/E-Net\/GetImage.ashx?lm=635651189074600000&amp;id=48431&amp;w=778\" alt=\"\" width=\"319\" height=\"209\" \/><figcaption>Professor Tom Arcaro addresses the Periclean Scholars Class of 2018 at an induction ceremony on April 16, 2015.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Elon University&#8217;s Periclean Scholars celebrated their newest members on April 16 when faculty leaders inducted students\u00a0from the Class of 2018 into the program&#8217;s ranks.<\/p>\n<p>Thirty-two freshmen\u00a0representing a variety of majors were welcomed by Professor Steve Braye, a faculty member in the Department of English who will mentor the cohort as they focus their studies on the African nation of Zambia.<\/p>\n<p>The Periclean Scholars program at Elon University is committed to raising the level of civic engagement and social responsibility of the entire university community and to developing students with a deep sense of global citizenship and commitment to the common good. Students who become part of the Periclean Scholars program take a series of courses culminating in a class project of global social change.<\/p>\n<p>The ceremony included charges from representatives of each of the three standing classes of Periclean Scholars, comments<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1659\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1659\" style=\"width: 295px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.elon.edu\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/73\/files\/2015\/04\/Dan-Baum.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1659\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.elon.edu\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/73\/files\/2015\/04\/Dan-Baum.jpg\" alt=\"Dan Baum, executive director of the Redwoods Group Foundation addresses the Class of 2018\" width=\"295\" height=\"240\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1659\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dan Baum, executive director of the Redwoods Group Foundation addresses the Class of 2018<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>from founding director Professor Tom Arcaro, and inspiring words from special guest speaker Dan Baum, executive director of the Redwoods Group Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>At the ceremony, Elon junior\u00a0Morgan Abate from the Class of 2016 was announced as the Periclean of the Year.
