{"id":1528,"date":"2015-02-03T15:08:05","date_gmt":"2015-02-03T19:08:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.elon.edu\/pericleanscholars\/?p=1528"},"modified":"2015-02-04T13:47:20","modified_gmt":"2015-02-04T17:47:20","slug":"welcome-back-for-a-busy-spring-semester","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.elon.edu\/pericleanscholars\/2015\/02\/03\/welcome-back-for-a-busy-spring-semester\/","title":{"rendered":"Welcome back for a busy spring semester!"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Welcome back for a busy spring semester!<\/h2>\n<p>All Pericleans,<\/p>\n<p>I hope that your Winter Term was productive, engaging and that you were able to get some good family time in over the breaks since the end of Fall term. \u00a0I suspect you share my enthusiasm to get the current semester started and to move forward on all things Periclean.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some updates and reminders:<\/p>\n<p>1. \u00a0The Mentors are scheduled to meet on Tuesdays every fortnight beginning next week. \u00a0Pass on to your Mentor any ideas\/concerns, etc.<\/p>\n<p>2. \u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.elon.edu\/e-web\/academics\/special_programs\/project_pericles\/Steering.xhtml\">Steering Committee <\/a>will meet also every other week on Thursdays at 4:00 inn Global Commons 210 beginning Thursday, February 12th. \u00a0Please make sure that your Class has two representatives that can attend Steering Committee. \u00a0This spring there will be some important work happening on the Steering Committee and I am looking forward to a productive semester!<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.elon.edu\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/73\/files\/2014\/09\/Pericleanlogohaiti.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1446\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.elon.edu\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/73\/files\/2014\/09\/Pericleanlogohaiti-298x300.png\" alt=\"Pericleanlogohaiti\" width=\"298\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.elon.edu\/pericleanscholars\/files\/2014\/09\/Pericleanlogohaiti-298x300.png 298w, https:\/\/blogs.elon.edu\/pericleanscholars\/files\/2014\/09\/Pericleanlogohaiti-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/blogs.elon.edu\/pericleanscholars\/files\/2014\/09\/Pericleanlogohaiti.png 421w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 298px) 100vw, 298px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>3. \u00a0The Induction Ceremony for the Class of 2018 is scheduled for 4:30PM Thursday, April 16th. \u00a0Please mark your calendars now. \u00a0Kevin Trapani, CEO and founder of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.redwoodsgroup.com\">Redwoods Group<\/a> will be our featured speaker. \u00a0In line with past tradition, each Class will have one or two representatives that will give a short charge to the incoming Class. \u00a0The Class of 2017 is organizing\u00a0this event and someone from that Class will need the name(s) of your speaker in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n<p>4. \u00a0Each Class needs to have a syllabus in to me no later than Friday, February 20th. \u00a0Associate Director and 2016 Mentor April Post and I are working on template syllabi for all Periclean Classes and will get a draft out to all Mentors by the end of the week. \u00a0Attached is a very early draft that you are welcome to use as a starting point for your Class discussion. \u00a0In short, in addition to basic information on reading, research and writing assignments, all syllabi need to list anticipated learning outcomes and these should reflect select\u00a0AAC&amp;U VALUE\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.elon.edu\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/73\/files\/2015\/02\/All_Rubrics.pdf\">Rubrics<\/a>\u00a0relevant to Periclean.<\/p>\n<p>5. \u00a0Keep in mind as you consider drop\/add and\/ long term academic career planning that beginning Winter term 2016 GST445 &#8220;Global Partnership Through Service&#8221; will be offered by your Mentor. \u00a0This class satisfies one of your advanced studies requirements. \u00a0This Class may or may not include a travel component depending upon Elon and State Department travel restrictions related to your country of focus. \u00a0[See below for the course description. \u00a0This is a recommended, not required \u00a0course for all Pericleans.]<\/p>\n<p>6. \u00a0As with past semesters please make sure that someone in your Class is responsible for posting on our <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.elon.edu\/pericleanscholars\/\">blog<\/a> each week an update (with photos, if possible, even if it is &#8220;just&#8221; The goals of the course are to collaborate effectively in order to continue to learn about a variety of aspects about this country or region. These will include: politics, culture, history, language, social issues, and the country\u2019s relations within the larger world.\u00a0\u00a0Students in this class will continue to develop partnerships in the country or region of choice in order to work toward improvements on an issue affecting the people of this area.\u00a0\u00a0An overarching theme of this course is to require the students to demonstrate command of the theoretical and methodological tool sets that they have learned in prior courses, includinggeneral studies courses, classes in their major, and all prior Periclean classes to communicate these perspectives to their cohort, and to effectively use these skills to meaningfully contribute to the various class projects and goals. Students will also be discussing issues related to grant writing, humanitarian aid, and sustainable program development.\u00a0This course is writing intensive.
