{"id":1223,"date":"2014-03-20T08:23:03","date_gmt":"2014-03-20T12:23:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.elon.edu\/pericleanscholars\/?p=1223"},"modified":"2014-11-22T06:26:22","modified_gmt":"2014-11-22T10:26:22","slug":"class-of-2014-on-e-net","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.elon.edu\/pericleanscholars\/2014\/03\/20\/class-of-2014-on-e-net\/","title":{"rendered":"Class of 2014 on E-Net"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>The Class of 2014 on the move<\/h2>\n<p>Read <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elon.edu\/e-net\/Article\/89470\">this article<\/a> for news on the partnership efforts of the Class of 2014.<\/p>\n<p>From their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.indiegogo.com\/projects\/space-for-change-building-community-in-central-appalachia\">Indiegogo<\/a>\u00a0site:<\/p>\n<h3><b>Who we are?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>We are the Periclean Scholars Class of 2014, a group of students from Elon University committed to sustainable progress in Central Appalachia, an area dominated by poverty and the divisiveness of coal politics.<\/p>\n<p>Three years ago, we partnered with the Boone-Raleigh Community Center in Whitesville, West Virginia to provide a space for open dialogue and discussion about community issues, youth programming, and the preservation of Appalachian heritage and history.<\/p>\n<p>We have committed to the development of the center\u2019s programs through frequent volunteer trips, fundraising efforts, and tangible initiatives such as the construction of a children\u2019s library, equipped with more than 500 books and other educational resources.<\/p>\n<h3><b>Why we need your help?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>Prior to graduation, we hope to help purchase the building and support the sustainbility of the center, whose mission is to promote unity and hope by providing both a common space and shared resources for present and future generations.<\/p>\n<p>Since its opening in late 2009, the Boone-Raleigh Community Center has focused on community development through programs and initiatives designed to bring people together, regardless of political or environmental views. Their work includes the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Weekly community meals<\/li>\n<li>Community potluck dinners<\/li>\n<li>Locally grown produce through provision of individual raised-garden beds<\/li>\n<li>Better Living Workshops<\/li>\n<li>Christmas Toy Giveaway<\/li>\n<li>Support for substance abuse<\/li>\n<li>Space for local entrepreneurs and artisans to sell goods<\/li>\n<li>Annual Apple Butter Festival<\/li>\n<li>Annual Kid\u2019s Day<\/li>\n<li>Holiday parties (Easter, Halloween, Christmas)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Any donation is greatly appreciated and 100% will go directly towards the Boone-Raleigh Community Center, a 501 (c) 3 nonprofit.Thank you for supporting us!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Class of 2014 on the move Read this article for news on the partnership efforts of the Class of 2014.
