Sustainability for Hogares Sanos Program

We (the 2013s) met with the 2016s today for about an hour to further discuss the sustainability of Hogares Sanos next year. It was a great turnout! Close to ten 2016s came and seemed very eager and ready to give Hogares Sanos a whirl. I think it’s safe to say the Hispanic women we’ve been working with are just as eager and ready. Our class is excited to see how the program evolves next year! Keep us updated, Class of 2016 🙂

Class of 2015: 5/14 Class Notes

Over the summer, we will read the same common reading for the Class of 2017: Little Princes. Each of us are responsible for getting our hands on the book and reading it before the start of the fall semester

Right now, it looks like we’re in a good postion to make great strides in the fall. By fall break, we will work towards fundraising, firmly identifying ourselves, and forming relationships with local and Haitian human trafficking organizations. We will read Crimes so Monstrous as well as take a look at the book assigned for this semester, Not in My Town.

In the fall, we will also have a more rigorous grading scheme. At the beginning of the semester, each specific committee will create a set of goals, and part of our grade will stem from accomplishing these goals. We will also have an academic paper due focused on Restavek and human trafficking. The paper will connect our readings, our class progress, and our individual experiences. Remember, we are Periclean scholars!

At this point in time, these are potential focus Haitian organization: Jean Cadet, Restavek Freedom Foundation, Free the Slaves, St. Joseph’s, Restavek Freedom Alliance.

One subcommittee will complete the application for a waiver to lift the restriction on travelling to Haiti.

Fundraising money could be used for plane tickets as well as for our partner organizations!

In the spring, we will have a committee begin identifying a live-in Haitian scholar to stay near Elon and add depth to our project and community. More discussion will come in the next academic year.

Regarding lateral entry. We do not have a decision as to whether we would need lateral entries to keep the same approximate class size, whether we would want lateral entries if several people decide to leave our class, or what redeeming qualities we would look for in our candidates. Dr. Warner will have final decisions from anyone who plans to discontinue their participation by the end of the semester. If a significant number of people decide to leave, we will continue this conversation at that time.
