Indigenous wisdom encompasses many fields including ecological, botanical and taxonomical knowledge, and is acquired through daily experimentation. It is passed from one generation to the next, typically by word of mouth, and carried in the vessels of culture, language, legend, myth and folklore and serves as a storehouse for local biological information. People around the world are now recognizing that this invaluable knowledge, externally validated by Western science, is diminishing and this impacts all levels of society. Indigenous wisdom can provide an appropriate model to improve the standard of living and quality of life for all, while sustaining the health of the environment for future generations.
