Director of Education & Communications, Marian Cheek Jackson Center (Chapel Hill)

Sharing this post from our former AmeriCorps VISTA host site and UNC-Chapel Hill community partner, the Marian Cheek Jackson Center:

The Marian Cheek Jackson Center for Saving & Making History is a community-based nonprofit dedicated to honoring, renewing, and building community in Northside and Pine Knolls, historically Black neighborhoods in Chapel Hill, NC. As our Director of Education & Communications, you will 1) implement and oversee the Center’s k-12 intergenerational curriculum in local, oral, and civil rights history, Learning Across Generations and 2) develop and maintain MCJC branding and messaging strategies across print-based and online platforms.

The Learning Across Generations curriculum is based on Center resources, including the 150 oral histories and hundreds of archival materials held in the MCJC Oral History Trust. It is dedicated to bringing local history—including that of life under Jim Crow and through civil rights struggle—into creative dialogue with students across the Chapel Hill, Carrboro, and Orange County schools. In keeping with the Center’s community-first planning model, the curriculum is supported by a Community Mentor Team, a group of senior educators and civil rights activists who serve as advisors, facilitators, and featured guests. The Learning Across Generations curriculum serves the Jackson Center’s larger aims to secured intergenerational continuity and to disrupt conventional history by advancing often muted voices, including those of elders and youth.

Leading communications at the Jackson Center is as much about maintaining an active online presence and managing internal systems as it is about constantly developing and renewing community connections, of which our old-school “print link,” The Northside News, is a key component.
