Communications and Events Specialist, SOURCE, Johns Hopkins University

Join our growing team as our inaugural SOURCE Communications and Events Specialist!

The Communications and Events Specialist will be responsible for coordinating the communication efforts and supporting special events for SOURCE, the community engagement and service-learning center for the Johns Hopkins University Schools of Public Health, Nursing, and Medicine. (job req # 9774)

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

The Specialist will effectively communicate SOURCE’s mission and activities to a broad audience of stakeholders interested and involved in community engagement in Baltimore City. The Specialist will also support SOURCE special events. This position reports to SOURCE’s Director. Occasional weekend and evening hours may be required.

The Specialist will:

  • Assist with developing overall long-term communications plan, as well as marketing and outreach strategies for individual initiatives;
  • Identify stories about the center and institutional initiatives and programs, and faculty, staff, student, alumni, and community profiles; and produce written materials for electronic, print, web, video;
  • Serve as lead writer and editor for all communications content, including, but not limited to SOURCE weekly newsletter, social media, reports, and web content;
  • Responsible for communications projects from concept to completion, including but not limited to promotional campaigns, weekly email marketing, social media campaigns, video, photography, and web content.
    • Identify target audience segments, design engaging messages and determine optimal channels to reach audiences.
    • Draft budget recommendations for communications.
  • Assist with drafting and implementing brand standards to deliver a consistent voice and appearance for all SOURCE communications.
    • Provide vision for outreach materials and create high-quality products
  • Write and update content for SOURCE website; collaborate with web designers and developers to ensure website reflects brand identity;
  • Monitor and evaluate marketing initiatives (conduct evaluations, review email list membership and member activity, analyze website traffic and trends with Google Analytics);
  • Maintain working relationships with communications contacts at JHU schools, divisions, and centers.
  • Coordinate and grow SOURCE’s offering of special one-time events, including annual Community Involvement Fair, Seminars, departmental and group Service Projects, and community capacity building workshops.
  • Partner with departments and groups to coordinate local one-time service projects.
  • Track and report key community engagement metrics.
  • Other duties as assigned, to support SOURCE special events and communications.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field.
  • 2 years related experience.
  • Advanced degree may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with social media platforms in a professional setting and familiar with web content management.
  • Experience in community-based work, particularly in Baltimore is a plus.

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Successful candidates will be high energy and outgoing, with the proven capacity to work quickly and accurately, both independently and with a small team of dedicated professionals.
  • Ability to work comfortably in a fast-paced environment and effectively prioritize managing multiple projects, while setting and meeting demanding deadlines.
  • The position requires strong written and interpersonal communication skills, tact, and sensitivity.

Role/Level/Range: ATP/3/PB

Starting Salary Range: $42,256 – $52,000; commensurate with experience

Employee group: Full-Time

Employee subgroup: Exempt

Schedule: 37.5hrs; Mon – Fri
