There are several great fellowship and internship opportunities for students and recent grads of North Carolina colleges who are interested in community service and the public good. Applications for most of these experiences are due in early 2018!
Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation Fellowship
The Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation offers one two-year, paid fellowship (beginning July 1) to an individual who demonstrates an interest in philanthropy, public policy, community service and/or the nonprofit sector. This position is salaried and includes benefits. Eligible candidates must be natives or residents of North Carolina and/or graduates of an accredited North Carolina college or university.
Applications due January 8.
Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation Summer Internship
An eight-week paid summer internship at the foundation’s office in Winston-Salem. Candidates must be either currently enrolled in an accredited North Carolina undergraduate or graduate program or a North Carolina resident. Stipend and housing support available. (NOT the same as ZSR Non-profit Internships.)

North Carolina State Government Internships
The State of North Carolina Internship Program offers students real-world experience in a wide range of state government workplaces and agencies, including the Museum of Natural Sciences, the Office of the Governor, the NC Court of Appeals, Department of Public Instruction, and more. Read about 2018 positions here. To be eligible, you must be a permanent North Carolina resident attending a college, university, law school, technical institute, or community college.

Duke Endowment Fellowship
The Fellowship is a two-year, full-time assignment that gives emerging leaders a unique opportunity in the philanthropic sector, as well as an annual salary and benefits. Candidates must be past/current residents of North or South Carolina OR graduates of a college/university in North or South Carolina AND have 1-2 years work experience after obtaining an undergraduate degree and/or hold a graduate degree.

Jaime Kirk Hahn Fellowship
Open to current community college/university students, emerging leaders finding their way after school, young professionals looking to make a difference, creatives seeking to influence change through their work, or community activists looking for a project to impact. Fellows are paired with non-profits in the Triangle area and receive a $6,000 living stipend for the summer and other support, if eligible.

Shannon St. John Fellowship
Triangle Community Foundation is pleased to announce a 10-week paid summer fellowship to a current graduate student with a demonstrated interest in the social sector of the Triangle region. The Shannon St. John Fellowship will provide a valuable project-based experience working closely with the Community Engagement team. This is a great opportunity to gain experience in a dynamic work environment that is focused on making our region a better place for all residents.

Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation Non-profit Internships
This program offers paid internship opportunities to 20 Pell grant-eligible college and university students enrolled in four-year institutions across NC. Students spend a minimum of eight weeks during the summer with grantee host organizations. Internships offer a range of exposure and skill-building opportunities in areas such as research, community outreach, public policy, communications, fundraising and social media. Interns receive a taxable stipend of $3,200.

AJ Fletcher Foundation Fellowship
The Fletcher Fellow will primarily work on projects that support the organization’s goal to amplify grantees’ voices in public spaces. Activities will support efforts in communications, including creating website and social media content, producing our podcast series, and writing press releases. This is a one-year position that includes competitive compensation: $37,000 annual salary, paid holidays and vacation, employee benefits, and a professional development allowance. Fellows work full-time from our offices based in Raleigh, NC starting in August.
Application opens late January, closes March 1, 2018.
SECU Public Fellows Internships Program
Available for students at these NC schools: Elizabeth City State, Fayetteville State, UNC Wilmington, Winston-Salem State, Western Carolina, and North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. Each participating university administers the SECU Public Fellows Internship program locally and targets up to twenty students per campus with a maximum stipend or payment of $5,000 per intern. Students interested in being an SECU Public Fellows Intern should contact their participating university.
Democracy NC Democracy Summer
Democracy Summer is a full-time, nine-week summer internship focused on voting rights organizing and advocacy. Ideal for students interested in a career in public service, politics, a non-profit field, or community-based work. Rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors enrolled in NC community colleges, colleges, and universities are eligible to apply.
Application opens in January, typically with a mid-March deadline.
NC Justice Center – Summer Policy Institute
The North Carolina Summer Policy Institute (NCSPI) is a competitive program that aims to foster and develop the state’s next generation of policy analysts and leaders. NCSPI will bring together 20 highly qualified students from across the state to participate in a three-day, highly engaging learning experience. NC students who are rising College Juniors and Seniors or recent graduates not enrolled in a graduate program.
Application opens January 8.
