Staff Editor and Editor, Diversity and Democracy, AAC and U

The Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U), a national higher education organization committed to advancing quality and equity in undergraduate education, seeks a bright, self-motivated, productive, and creative individual for the position of Staff Editor and Editor, Diversity & Democracy. The position requires excellent editing, writing, and organizational skills; familiarity with web-based research and outreach; knowledge of topics related to teaching and learning, academic leadership, diversity, equity, civic engagement, and global learning in higher education; and the ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, high-energy environment with diverse colleagues and members.

The Staff Editor and Editor, Diversity & Democracy will provide editorial services across a range of AAC&U publications that champion evidence-based, sustainable models and strategies for promoting quality and equity in undergraduate education. Responsibilities include substantive editing, copy editing, and proofreading for various print and electronic communications, including periodicals, newsletters, monographs, reports, organizational statements, op eds, and blog posts. AAC&U works in close collaboration with thought leaders and writers inside and outside of the organization to create resources for AAC&U’s nearly 1,400 member institutions.

A major component of the position will be planning, writing for, and editing Diversity & Democracy, AAC&U’s quarterly periodical on diversity, equity, civic engagement, and global learning in higher education. The editor will work collaboratively with the executive editor, an editorial advisory board, AAC&U staff, and invited authors to reflect organizational priorities and best emerging practices in the field. Diversity & Democracy is produced both in print and online, so experience working with both modes of publication is preferred.

Qualifications: Professional experience editing and writing; excellent organizational skills and attentiveness to deadlines; ability to work independently and as part of a team; strong computer skills and web editing experience; adeptness at learning new things; keen attention to detail; and familiarity with academic programs and debates about US diversity, equity in student learning, and civic engagement in local and global communities.

Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree preferred. Salary commensurate with experience; exceptional benefits. Please submit a letter of interest with salary requirements and résumé to jobs@aacu.org, or to AAC&U, Box SEEDD, 1818 R Street, NW, Washington, DC 20009. Review of applications will begin on July 5, 2017.
