Assistant Director of Civic Engagement, St. Mary’s University

 

The Assistant Director is responsible for developing and implementing civic engagement, service and immersion programs that advance students’ experience and understanding of the Catholic and Marianist mission of St. Mary’s University. The Assistant Director is responsible for civic engagement programs and activities that serve to influence Catholic faith formation and educating ethical leaders for the common good. This position will work to implement and expand programming that connects the understanding of faith and justice and civic engagement in light of our Marianist charism and Catholic identity. Additionally, this position will focus programming on local service and engagement initiatives, national and global justice concerns. Must be able to work some evenings and weekends and travel occasionally.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.

  • Promote awareness in support of civic engagement, community service and outreach, Catholic Social Teaching, social justice, and the Common Good.
  • Assist with review of co-curricular civic engagement, service learning, and student leadership programs and services for organizational structure, achievement of departmental objectives, and mission effectiveness.
  • Plan and implement annual Civic Engagement Week activities and programs for the campus community.
  • Aid in the planning and hosting of the annual Volunteer and Post Graduate Service Fair; serve as advisor to upper-class students discerning post-graduate service.
  • Serve as the primary service advisor, meeting one on one with students and proactively guiding Registered Student Organizations towards potential and best fit service projects, with particular focus on Catholic, west-side partners.
  • Oversee logistical components of service-learning, including data tracking (using civic engagement software system, GivePulse), classroom presentations, working with students to troubleshoot concerns with placements, and general mentorship as needed for students involved in service-learning courses.
  • Guide Civic Engagement student interns in planning and promotion of on-going service events and opportunities through GivePulse.
  • Assist Director with coordination of the Community Based Work Study (CBWS) Program. This includes selection of and maintaining relationships with non-profit CBWS partners, recruiting for and selection of students for open positions, developing opportunities for reflection with participating students in the program and making regular site visits to non-profit partners.
  • Aid the Coordinator of Marianist Student Initiatives in planning of alternative spring breakout experiences.
  • Work to grow existing domestic immersion experiences to include opportunities offered at least three times per academic year.
  • In collaboration with Director for Civic Engagement, plan and execute annual international immersion experience, focusing on building global community in solidarity and faith while examining issues of social injustice in light of our Catholic and Marianist identity.
  • Assist Director for Civic Engagement with the planning and preparation of Summer of Service program and existing summer service opportunities; work with office staff to expand these opportunities moving forward.
  • Work in collaboration with University Ministry and Student Activities and Transition Programs to offer educational opportunities focused on social concerns and issues of justice. This includes but is not limited to film series and discussions, brown bag lunch discussions, voter registration/faithful citizenship initiatives, hunger and homelessness awareness week events, as well as city-wide justice efforts, such as the annual MLK March and Cesar Chavez March.
  • Responsible for serving as an instructor, providing instructional support, and participating in all associated faculty development programs for the freshmen success course, ND0101 – Personal and Academic Development
  • Attend regular Civic Engagement professional staff meetings
  • Meet regularly with the Director for Civic Engagement and the Civic Engagement Team
  • Participate in university-related student activities, including orientation, new student recruitment activities, commencement, and convocation activities
  • Additional duties as assigned by the Director, Civic Engagement.

EDUCATION:  Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree and 2-3 years of higher education experience preferred. 

QUALIFICATIONS:  Demonstrated understanding of Catholic Social Teaching is required. Prior experience working with student populations in immersion programs, justice and advocacy efforts, community engagement, student organizations or other experiential learning programs is preferred. Excellent written, interpersonal, presentation, and organizational skills are essential. Experience in long-term service program or comparable service experience and Spanish language proficiency preferred.
