Assistant Director – Civic Engagement Program, Northeastern University

The Civic Engagement Program (CEP) began in 2008 with a first-year class of 84 students and was designed to ensure Northeastern student scholars not only excelled academically, but through CEP had the opportunity to grow as civic-minded individuals who give back through service to our local and global communities.  Today, the program has grown dramatically to serve over 900 scholarship Student Scholars. Each Scholar is required to serve 100 hours of community service each year that they are enrolled at Northeastern. For first-year students, there is a highly structured program which includes training, reflections and a weekly service partnership with a local community based organization.  For upper class students, there is a system of accountability, support, as well as service and networking opportunities to support Scholars in earning the required amount of hours.

The Assistant Director, Civic Engagement Program serves as a member of the Center of Community Service. The primary responsibilities of this position include working with the Associate Director for Service & Community Partnerships to ensure students and community-based organization participants in the Civic Engagement Program (CEP) are appropriately supported through their service partnerships. The Assistant Director will coordinate the service of specific groups of student scholars throughout their 4-5 years at Northeastern, and coordinate a percentage of the first-year student scholars.  The Assistant Director will aid the Associate Director in the development and maintenance of campus and community partnerships associated with CEP.  The Assistant Director, will also aid with the recruitment, support and facilitation of student leadership roles for CEP and tracking and assessment of the program.  Additional responsibilities include, supporting the Center of Community Service in the facilitation of major events and initiatives, as well as serving as a liaison and representative at internal and external meetings and conferences as requested.

The Assistant Director, Civic Engagement Program will report to the Associate Director for Service & Community Partnerships.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree and 1-3 years of experience working with students in a higher education or service setting. • Strong advising, communication, and organizational skills. • Demonstrated success in implementing and coordinating service initiatives. • Experience and interest in designing/revising and implementing program assessment and evaluation. • Understanding of community service/engagement, social justice, and student development. • Experience working in a collaborative team setting. • Ability to work in a fast-paced, diverse, and urban environment. • Familiarity with the Boston community desirable.
