Associate Director of Student Leadership and Educational Programming, East Carolina University

East Carolina University’s Division of Student Affairs actively supports the University’s missions of education, research, and service by providing comprehensive programs and services to assist each student in developing intellectually, socially, morally, and culturally.

Under the Division of Student Affairs, the Volunteer and Service-Learning Center (VSLC), in partnership with local, regional, and international communities, seeks to foster an environment where individuals learn about themselves and their community, take action through service, and advocate for lasting social change.

The Associate Director for Student Leadership and Educational Programming supports integrative learning experiences through effective planning, implementation and assessment of current initiatives and develops additional experiences that foster community engagement and responsible citizenship. This is a professional position with responsibilities having a direct impact on the quality of students’ educational experiences and interaction with their peers, as well as the campus community at large. Additionally, this position requires a strong knowledge of budgetary practices and risk management; independent decision making and critical thinking skills are necessary.

Working as a member of the VSLC team, the Associate Director for Educational Programming and Student Leadership oversees all co-curricular and student leadership programming through the Volunteer and Service-Learning Center. Key responsibilities include oversight of VSLC’s alternative break programs, signature co-curricular volunteer programs including Campus Kitchen, Give and Go, Pirate Playtime, ECU Reads/Writes/Counts, and student staff leadership development and training. Other responsibilities include serving as a liaison between the university/VSLC and several community partners and campus partners. Oversees ECU’s relationship with North Carolina Campus Compact. Assessment of learning outcomes is a key component of all position responsibilities.

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate all aspects of VSLC’s alternative spring break program, including selecting sites and leaders, recruiting participants, managing budgets, and assessing program impact
  • Supervise and mentor a full-time VISTA volunteer and oversee operations of ECU’s Campus Kitchen program.
  • Serve as main VSLC liaison with North Carolina Campus Compact; attend NCCC trainings and meetings as necessary.
  • Coordinate all aspects of VSLC’s student staff, including recruiting, selection, training, and supervision.
  • Coordinate VSLC promotion and assessment of one-time community events.
  • Serve as liaison between several community partners and the university; Assess community partnerships on a regular basis.
  • Coordinate recruitment fairs each semester.
  • Work closely with Administrative Assistant to collect volunteer data and maintain relational database of student records.
  • Develop and facilitate educational programs and preparation sessions for students, community partners and faculty as needed.
  • Serve as main VSLC liaison to other Student Affairs offices working on collaborative leadership development.
  • Review necessary policies and procedures to ensure maximum educational value of VSLC co-curricular programming, exposure to diverse populations, personal safety, management of risk, and effective use of transportation.
  • Work with Director to ensure appropriate recognition of engaged students and campus partners.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development related to leadership development, student development theory and best practices, community engagement, etc.
  • Keep current with student development and leadership theory, methods and initiatives.
  • Work as part of team to advance the mission of the VSLC and Student Affairs.

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree from an appropriately accredited institution in related field required (education, higher education administration, college student personnel administration, experiential education).
  • Minimum of three years of experience in a higher education setting working directly with students, preferably coordinating community service, leadership development, and/or experiential learning programs.
  • Ability to develop and maintain relationships with community agencies, students, and faculty.
  • Experience and desire to work with persons from diverse backgrounds, particularly marginalized groups; experience with multicultural education desired.
  • Ability to develop collaborative and diverse relationships within and between college and community agencies.
  • Commitment to communicating tenets of VSLC mission statement and guiding principles, especially as they relate to service, community outreach, and social justice.
  • Excellent communication (written and verbal) and project management skills.
  • Ability to choose priorities among competing demands.
  • Ability/willingness to work some nights/weekends, commitment to teamwork and collaboration.
