Associate Director, Carolina Center for Public Service, UNC Chapel Hill

 

The Carolina Center for  Public Service (CCPS) is a pan-university  center reporting to the Office of the Provost. The mission of CCPS is to engage and support the faculty, students and staff of the University of North  Carolina at Chapel Hill in meeting the needs of North Carolina and beyond.  The Center strengthens the University’s public service commitment by promoting  scholarship and service that are responsive to the concerns of the state and  contribute to the common good. The position is classified as EPA non-faculty and reports to the director of the Center.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The associate director assists the director with the establishment and fulfillment of the mission,  goals and day-to- day operation of the Center and is responsible for all facets of the Center in the absence of the director. The associate director works closely with the director, faculty and staff colleagues to carry out the principal functions of the Center: 1) administration; 2) evaluation and assessment; 3) faculty and campus programming, implementation and management; 4) course instruction and coordination; 5) community partnerships and 6) resource development.

Primary areas of responsibility include:

Administration and supervision: (30%)

  • Have primary responsibility and support for human resource and accounting functions
  • Work with director to support process and implementation of strategic planning and to ensure effective day-to-day operations of all Center activities
  • Lead administrative team meetings and co-lead staff meetings
  • Serve as the TIM and work-study administrator as well as the IT and UBC  liaison
  • Provide needed information and support to Center’s development efforts through gifts, grants and other fund-raising
  • Provide guidance and supervision to the following staff: senior program officer for service-learning and student programs, program officer for
    communications and marketing and front office staff, including work-study students
  • Assume additional responsibilities as needed which may include aspects of other programs, representation of the Center at University and community committees and events, promotion of additional effective public service activities and further development of Center activities

Evaluation and Assessment: (25%)

  • Work with director and other staff to establish on-going assessment and evaluation of CCPS programs, both individually and collectively,
    including development of evaluation research around student civic engagement and faculty development
  • Advise student organizers and other students who plan, implement and evaluate various Center programs or who are interested in evaluation research
  • Help apply assessment and evaluation findings to develop and improve programs
  • Work with other campus entities and academic partners, including institutional research to develop institutional measures and metrics as
    needed

Faculty Programming: (15%)

  • Oversee implementation of the Faculty Engaged Scholars program
  • Establish workshops, seminars and other trainings that support faculty development for engaged scholarship
  • Oversee Center’s faculty and graduate student development activities around service-learning and engaged scholarship, including the annual Course Development Institute in partnership with the APPLES Service- Learning program

Campus Programming: (15%)

  • Work with director and board to design and implement campus programming in support of engagement and engaged scholarship, particularly in regard to the campus Academic Plan including the Carolina Engagement Council
  • Provide organizational support to campus-wide programs and collaborations around engaged teaching, research and service, such as the Skills and Practices of Engaged Scholarship seminars and GO! Global Orientation
  • Maintain and cultivate partnerships and relationships with community organizations that support the Center’s activities around engaged
    scholarship and service
  • Represent the Center at community and University functions as needed

Course Instruction and Coordination: (15%)

  • Oversee, and in some cases, serve as instructor for courses associated with Center programming, such as Philanthropy as a Tool for Social Change and SMART Mentoring
  • Explore additional opportunities to establish academic credit through Center programs such as Outward Bound

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Doctorate in human/social services, higher education or related field preferred ­
  • Minimum of seven years of progressive experience with growing responsibilities related to program planning, management and evaluation;
    supervision; engaged research and teaching
  • Outstanding administrative skills, including organizational planning and development
  • Knowledge of current practices and trends in engaged scholarship and faculty development in higher education
  • Documented skills in program planning and assessment, applied research and evaluation, including both quantitative and qualitative methods
  • Ability to independently plan, manage and meet deadlines for multiple projects with minimal supervision and a positive attitude
  • Ability to work well with Center constituencies including faculty, staff, administrators, students and community representatives
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills as well as attention to detail and demonstrated experience working as an effective team member
  • Flexible, adaptable and skilled at balancing multiple tasks and works well under pressure
  • Established commitment to public service and engagement

SALARY: Commensurate with experience, plus UNC-Chapel Hill benefits.
