I recently saw a movie about a protagonist that I found so compelling, I am willing to call it my favorite movie of all time (And I have seen many and my list is very exclusive). Django Unchained was a remarkable film that I found so entertaining. The main character and hero, Django is a very dynamic character who see cover many aspects of the intangibles of what the definition of a hero is and what they stand for. Django Unchained is a film that takes place in the slavery days. A Bounty hunter purchases Django in a slave auction and treats him well and sets him free and the two become friends and end up being partners in the Bounty hunting business. I believe this film is realistic for the most part, as In it “could” technically happen, but obviously very unlikely.

Django is extraordinary in that he becomes such a great, fearless and driven bounty hunter that deals with a wide array of situations and emerges victorious in his mission and perseveres through his hardships. He is very heroic when he saves his wife and risks his life for her and then breaks free from capture once more after he frees her to reunite with her so they can live in prosperity together. Django is developed by the bounty hunter who frees him and teaches him his ways and teaches him that he can trust a white man and the two become very close and Django learns fearlessness and bravery from him. He develops from any old slave to a freed man reunited with his wife living lavishly.

For my favorite film character I chose to talk about Will Smith in the movie The Pursuit of Happyness. He plays a man named Chris Gardner who struggles for nearly 1 year being homeless with his young son. Gardner is definitely the protagonist in this movie and really the antagonist is the bad luck that seems to hit him on a daily basis from his wife leaving him to getting evicted from his house with his son. His intelligence and motivation are what get him through this horrible time. The audience is definitely sympathetic for Gardner and his young boy who are completely on there own against the world. Gardner does everything that he can to ensure that his young boy has a normal life and is the type of father that will never give up on bettering both him and his sons life. You also feel empathy for Gardner because you understand why he works so hard with everything he does, its not the average guy thats working just to make money and have a nice comfortable life, he is working to put food on the table and shelter over his head for his kid. My favorite part of the movie is when Gardner is in a cab with a man named Jay Twistle a manager for Dean Witter and impresses him by solving a Rubik’s cube during a short cab ride that really seems to help him get a job at Dean Witter and pull him out of his hole. The fact that he was a man that faced endless amounts of adversity, and had the knowledge, drive, and motivation to get past everything is the main reason why I chose Chris Gardner as my favorite movie character. You get the feeling that an ordinary man could never have accomplished 50 percent of what he did throughout this incredible movie.

Jamie Sullivan, as portrayed by Mandy Moore in the 2002 film A Walk To Remember is my favorite film character. The movie is based in my home state of North Carolina in a town called Beaufort which I have been to on vacation. It is a romance and drama movie that is somewhat of a tear jerker.

The narration of the film is told in first person. The narrative is told from Landon’s perspective, as he gets in trouble from a prank that went wrong and had to do different things in order to get out of trouble. The film allows him to be dynamic and evolve in to a much better person after doing the activities the principal made him do. Not only did it make him a better person, but it brought him closer to the love of his life, Jamie Sullivan.

Landon has a rough time in being able to grant permission from Jamie’s father to take her out on a date because of the trouble he had gotten in from the prank. Jamie’s father was the town’s Baptist minister and not afraid of letting people know that her faith is the most important part of her life even if it cost her some friends. Once Landon proves to him that he wants nothing but the best for Jamie and that he would do anything for her he is allowed to take her out on a date. In the end Jamie is diagnosed with a fatal disease in which Landon ends up marrying her right before she dies.

Overall, it is the relationship and true love between Jamie and Landon that draw me toward loving this movie. Romance movies are probably my favorite movie and this movie being a tear jerker makes me love it even more. Every time the movie is on television I make sure that I tune in to watch it. It will always be a favorite of mine.

VARGAS POST 5

I  saw the movie Looper (2012) by Rian Johnson, and I would recommend the movie for those that have not watched it.  The main character Joe, is the protagonist in the film and the film takes part in the year 2044 where in 30 years after that, time travel will have been invented and banned by the government.  But when the mob wants people dead, they send them back 30 years into the past and loopers, like Joe, kill them for a living. This character interested me a lot because one day the mob decides to end his “loop” and sends his future self for him to kill.  At one point, his future self starts to mock his past self, calling him a “kid” and “stupid”. This movie is way to confusing to be able to explain in words and be able to be comprehended, but ever since taking this class, I have started to see Joe as a folk hero simply because he is an average man that is placed in an extraordinary event.  Now whether time travel is a reasonable thing in 60 years is still beyond me.  But Joe comprehends ordinary people and in the movie he actually helps a girl from his future self that is trying to kill her daughter. He is pretty self centered in start of the movie where all he really begins to think about is himself and towards the end of the movie he changes and starts to be the opposite of that.  I would say that Joe could easily be a realistic folk hero just like Bonny and Clyde as long as the situation he was placed in the movie came true.

The Joker, the antagonist in The Dark Knight, is “an agent of chaos.” He is one of those men, Alfred says that “just wants to watch the world burn.” This aspect of the Joker’s character makes him exceptionally alluring. There is no reason behind his madness, with the exception of a slightly tainted childhood; he just has an inclination towards disaster. It is because of this motive that the audience is antipathetic towards the Joker. He makes rash decisions, placing everyday people in life-threatening scenarios for the thrill, decisions causing the audience to want him to “get what he deserves.”

The Joker has a very intriguing style. His exterior basically represents that of a twisted clown. What is more intriguing is the manner in which he leaves a crime scene. He always leaves a joker card behind, marking his trail. His crimes are always extreme, and these devastating acts contribute to why he serves as a foil to Batman. It is because of these dark acts that we can see the light in Batman.

The Joker has many objectives. His super objective is that he just wants to watch people suffer; observing the impact of his crimes fuels his fire. The Joker also wants to restore balance to the people of Gotham, or so he says. He wants the people to have power rather than the officials. Finally, the Joker enacts extreme crimes in attempts to give the people power, and to fulfill his needs of observing suffering.

When many people see Don Corleone, they think the Godfather. The classic mob boss in one of the most popular movies of our time. Even though he is part of an illegal activity in the movie, he is still my one of my favorite characters for this reason. He knows what he wants in life and he knows how to get it. He is willing to take out anything that gets in his way even if it involves doing something that is frowned upon. If you’ve seen the movie, you know that the Dons main value is family. If your in the mafia, you must look out for your family, that is their life, doing whatever they need to know to protect their name. That leads me to another value, reputation. Throughout the city the Don is leading his mafia against the police and other mobs. They are known as the best mafia throughout the film because of his leadership, he does whatever he needs to keep their reputation up from bribing police officers to taking over businesses. In regards to character functions, I would consider him a mentor, running the family business and mentoring his soliders to eventually take over the family business one day. I think the audience definitely has empathy towards him, they understand what drives him, money, fame, family, and reputation. That is his super objective. Power over the people and respect towards his family.  `

ARiesett Blog 5 Film Character

In the 2012 film The Odd Life of Timothy Green, Timothy Green (CJ Adams) is an interesting character. He was created by a thunderstorm during a drought in Cindy and Jim Greens garden in their backyard. Cindy and Jim Green are unable to have children, so they dream of their ideal child and list his characteristics. They put this list in a box and bury it in their garden. Timothy impacts their lives and encourages them to consider adoption.

Timothy is the protagonist in the film narrative whose main purpose is to be the temporary son of Cindy and Jim Green. He also adds comic relief to the narrative through his childish innocence. It is hard for the audience not to be empathetic to Timothy. Timothy is unique in that he has leafs on his legs since he grew from the garden. He is a noble boy with a good heart and a good sense of humor. He never gives up and is truthful to a fault. He also is a glass half full person and is talented like Picasso with a pencil. He is Cindy and Jim’s perfect child.  Every time Timothy expresses his characteristics, the same ones his parents wrote in the box, he loses a leaf from his leg and he changes with the seasons, which is why he is a temporary character.   His main goal in the narrative is to convince his parents to adopt a child and he achieves this in the end once he leaves them.

Mikael is portrayed as intelligent, clever, strong and depressed.  Throughout the movie, Mikael’s character is meant to be empathized.  He has run into a problem with his latest journalist story, he has a distant relationship with his family and he may be losing his business.  With his career and personal life in a slump, people are empathetic towards Mikael.

Mikael is sought after by a wealthy Swedish man who is looking for a person to help solve a family mystery.  The man chooses Mikael because Mikael is intelligent and an incredible journalist.  Mikael ultimately decides to take on the job with the help of an assistant.  The relationship between Mikael and his assistant Lisbeth changes drastically throughout the movie.  They start out as distant co-workers to becoming lovers.  This relationship is important to Mikael’s character because it shows his vulnerable side as well as creates a bond between them that is necessary for their completion of the investigation.

Mikael’s decision to engage in this job is a result of the wrath he is taking from his previous story that almost cost him his job.  By taking on this investigation, he was given money and was promised a way out of his law suit.   Mikael ends up figuring out the family mystery and ends up saving a lot of girls from being raped and killed.  I think that Mikael’s determination and intelligence allowed him to solve this family mystery that had been unsolved for over 20 years.  Mikael has a keen sense for details and was able to use this to figure out the mystery.

Mikael’s strengths and weaknesses are easily shown throughout the whole movie, making him relatable and appealing.  He is also in a sense a “hero” for solving the family mystery.  I found this movie to be incredible with detail and the character of Mikael to be extremely stimulating and intelligent.

The hero that I selected was Matt Buckner, played by Elijah Wood, in the movie Green Street Hooligans.  The plot of this movie is based around a soccer team and the group of men that follow each team.  They do not claim themselves to be a gang or anything, yet they worship their team and wear their colors proudly.  They fight with other clans and pride themselves on their reputation around the United Kingdom.  The movie is intense with both rhetoric and action.

The main character in this movie is Matt Buckner.  This young man was enrolled in Harvard to become a journalist, and was atop of his class.  This man had a bright future, until his roommate set him up to be kicked out for possession of cocaine.  After his expulsion he visits his sister in London and eventually gets hooked up wit the GST, the local clan.  Throughout the movie he develops into a strong and confident man.  He was timid and easily frightened at first, but by the end he is confident and frankly able to kick some butt.  He returns home and gets back at his roommate who set him up originally.  However, he doesn’t do it with a physical fight, he gets a confession and records it.  The most important thing that Buckner learns about himself is that he is able to defend himself and fight for what he wants.  He learns the correct way to do things and the limits that are able to reached.  He understands that in order to a true man, he must understand these limits and not cross them.  He learns from not only his brother-in-law’s but the rival clan’s leader.  Many people die and are sacrificed in this movie for the pride of the clan, however nothing is more important than the lessons that are learned by Matt Buckner about himself.

It’s hard to ask someone his or her favorite film character, but I would have to say my favorite character is Coach Carter in Coach Carter played by Samuel L. Jackson. In this film, Coach Carter is the protagonist and plays the role of being a coach, leader, and father figure to his high school basketball team. The setting of the film is in a rough neighborhood in California.

Coach Carter had recently took over the head coaching job and set higher standards for his players. Normally in high school and college, an athlete is required to maintain a 2.0 GPA. However, Coach Carter required his players to maintain a 2.3 GPA and the consequence of not maintaining that would be suspension and unable to play. The Richmond Oilers high school basketball team went undefeated for almost the entire season. Their MVP was benched due to poor academic grades and Coach Carter put his undefeated season on the line in order to stick to his values and precedents.

What Coach Carter did by raising the bar for academics was not only for the players to maintain good grades, but also taught them a lesson. Coach Carter taught his players values and urged them to go to college as well as forming them into mature young men.

Coach Carter’s emotions were empathy and the audience understood the emotion that drove him; to not only make his players better basketball players, but make tem better men and teach them valuable lessons in life. Samuel L. Jackson is definitely a reveal character as he lays everything he is about on the table and the players know that.
