“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy. The true neighbor will risk his position, his prestige, and even his life for the welfare of others.” This quote, from his 1963 book, Strength to Love, is my favorite quote of Martin Luther King Jr’s. He is saying it is easy to stand for what you believe when there are no consequences or people challenging you, but what about when everything you have is at stake. What kind of man will you be when you are being tested? Will you continue to stand up for the things you believe, even if it were to cost you everything? He is saying that a true man will not only stand up for himself, but he will also fight for his friends, family, and neighbors who cannot always fight for themselves.

This idea has allowed the United States as a country to get rid of segregation within our country and unite us as one, culturally diverse community. It took the efforts of many people to stand up for what they believe in for this to occur. Both white and black people sacrificed everything they had for the wellbeing of others; MLK was one of the biggest role models in this movement. We can still apply this quote today to everything we believe in. The world we live in today is far from perfect and to fix our problems there must be people to stand up for what is right to help us overcome our problems. MLK set a great example throughout his journey and he can most certainly be looked at as a hero to many.
