“We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly affects all indirectly.”

             -Martin Luther King Jr.-

In “Letters from a Birmingham Jail” Martin Luther King takes the time to address the criticism about his practices and beliefs that are rocking the nation. In his letter he references Socrates, St. Augustine, and Jesus and uses them to support his beliefs and make clear to the reader where he is coming from and how he intends to get there. Looking at the quote above we can see that he is also alluding to the scientist Sir Isaac Newton and his  Laws of Motion. There are three aforementioned laws, and the last one being of the most importance in this instance, it states “every action has an equal and opposite reaction”. These two quotes, both spoken by great men, remind us that one’s actions cause someone else to make their own action, and that person’s action causes another person to act and so on and so forth. MLKJ was tired of the unjust treatment of his people and choose to act nonviolently in order to make a better world for his children and friends to grow up in. Just as Newton was trying to explain how objects worked when acted on by a force, MLKJ explained in his letter how small changes can indirectly cause a greater change.

Today we see his teachings being practiced not only by Americans but also by people and groups around the globe. Looking at the earlier posts, we can see how small peaceful protests can bring about change that can alter a country for the better. Even on our campus a small change, like championing for the removal of Chick-Fila from campus can bring change, the board of hearings, and incite both sides of the issue to stand up and speak out for what they believe to be right. For even if its just a snowflake falling onto a bank of snow, that one small flake could be the final straw that incites the avalanche of change.

Great quotes from great men
