Martin Luther King Jr. was an American clergyman, activist, and leader of African American Civil Rights Movement. He is a well-respected man that has done a lot for our country, which is why Americans celebrate his accomplishments on the third Monday of January each year around his birthday on January 15. Martin Luther King Jr.’s phenomenal public speaking abilities played a key role is his success for the Civil Rights Movement. Quotes from his speeches are often times still talked about today. One of the quotes I liked the most when I researched Martin Luther Kind Jr. was “the ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.” This quote is from A Gift of Love: Sermons from Strength of Love and Other Preaching’s written by Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in 1963. This straightforward quote stood out to me the most because it relates to what we have been talked about in class when it comes to real-life heroes. A real-life hero goes above and beyond the views of the average person and stands up for the right thing even if others don’t agree with them. With that said, it also means that you find out who a person truly is based on how they respond to pressure and the hardships they go through. It easy to go through life when everything is handed to you, but the strongest people are the ones that have worked their way to the top and struggled to get there.

I think this quote you chose is a very inspirational piece of text. I like how you related it to the concept of heroes that we talked about in class. This is a great choice in quotes from such an inspirational and outstanding man.

What an awesome quote, I liked how you went outside of the readings to find it and what a gem it is. Your analysis in comparison to the heroes we’ve discussed in class is spot on. For as we’ve said like a million times in class “How can we measure good without something evil to compare it to”.
