V in V for Vendetta sacrifices many things.  He went through a lot of mental and physical pain to become what he was.  Some of this pain was his own choice but he was put through a lot of it by other people.  Once V escapes from the facility he devotes the rest of his life to destroying the oppressive government.  This is a massive sacrifice that is difficult to understand.  In the end he pays the ultimate sacrifice for his cause.

Another hero that scarifies many things is Neo from The Matrix.  Neo begins his life inside the “matrix”, which is a virtual world where he is held captive without knowledge of being captive.  His captives are a race of machines that are at war with humans in the future.  Neo is offered a choice to stay where he is or go to the real world.  Neo sacrifices his life to go into the real world, where he lives in poor conditions to fight the machines who kept him captive.  Later in the movie, Neo also willingly goes to rescue a person called Morpheus.  When he chooses to do this, he believes he will die doing so.  Neo devotes his life to fighting his captors similarly to V.  Both Neo and V willingly choose to give up their lives for a cause; this kind of sacrifice is difficult for anyone to want to choose.  This is what makes both of them a hero.

Good post! Although I have never seen The Matrix, it seems the this character is very devoted to what he views as “right” and wiling to risk it all for this cause. I think it is also very interesting that both Neo and V were held captive and I think it seems safe to say that this experience caused their future actions and in this way caused them to eventually be seen as a hero.

Interesting. The Matrix is probably my favorite movie. This was a cool comparison. In the way that the protagonists are the same so are the antagonists. The Machines shape the Matrix to ultimately make the humans believe in certain realities just as the British government had done in V for vendetta. It is Neo and V who see the truth and use their new knowledge to destroy this false curtain, good job!
