In late May 2012,  Nasrin Musarti,  was murdered outside of the battered women’s shelter she had been living at with her two children for two years. This is the result of something called an honor killing.

Honor killings are the practice of killing a female family member for shaming the family. Examples of this are by having sexual relations out of wedlock, disobeying requests, such as arranged marriages, or asking for a divorce. Culturally in some parts of the Arab world, the women have the power to shame their family by not adhering to social and country laws. A way to gain family honor back is to kill or mutilate the family member who shamed them. Very often women are brutally raped by other men or abused in a marriage, but instead of getting the help they need, their horror continues. Instead of blaming the perpetrator for their horrific crime, the women are blamed and cruelly punished, sometimes fatally.

After the death of Nasrin, a demonstration by the Na’am NGO, which helps at-risk women of all ages in the Arab sector, was held.  The Imam of Ramalah, a city in Israel, came to the protest to speak out against honor crimes saying, ““No religion agrees to murder and the Islamic religion is no exception. Anyone who uses Islam to justify murder is doing the wrong thing.”

The most important part of this dilemma is that people are starting to speak up. The main issue was that these killings were seen as acceptable by parts of society and officials turned a blind eye and let the killers get away. Fortunately, we are seeing more and more protests in the last year such as a protest in Iran where two-thousand people show up (picture above) as well as others in Pakistan in early march of 2012.

Honor killings are extremely unique. I have heard about them in several cultures and don’t really believe them to be correct. As you stated in your blog, the negativity and unfair qualities of this type of punishment are being questioned; which they should be.
