Stonewall Protest

A prime example of injustice is the Stonewall protest that happened on the evening of June 27, 1969. The protest was in the Greenwich Village district of New York City, New York. The police raided the Stonewall Inn, which was a homosexual bar. Bar advocates decided to fight back against the police and the riot lasted all night. Homosexuals were tired of being humiliated by law enforcement and decided to stand up for themselves. Their actions made them a part of history because this protest is considered the beginning of the homosexual movement.  President Clinton has made the Stonewall Inn a historical landmark.

Was it right for the government, specifically the law enforcement, to humiliate homosexuals? Homosexuals are people and citizens of the United States. They should not have to endure public embarrassment just because they favor people of their own sex. These bar patrons publically fought for their justice and because of that it encouraged more homosexuals to come out of the closet and be open about their sexuality. The homosexual movement has been able to make great strides today because of these people. In today’s world, homosexuals are allowed to marry in some states and there are several Supreme Court Cases currently deciding on what rights homosexuals should have in the United States.  Even if you disagree with the marriage of homosexuals, you can still see that the Stonewall protest was an act of justice. The government should not be allowed to publically humiliate any citizen. I am not sure what the future holds for the homosexual civil rights movement, but I do think the United States has come a long way fighting for equal rights of all citizens even if they are a minority.

It wasn’t right for the police to do anything. Nothing would have happened had they just let the people in the bar live their lives as they pleased. They CAME looking to stir up trouble
