R is for Retribution

“Cruelty and injustice, intolerance and oppression. And where once you had the freedom to object, to think and speak as you saw fit, you now have censors and systems of surveillance coercing your conformity and soliciting your submission.”

I believe that the main premise of the movie is retribution; from V wanting payback for what was done to him and also the people who are being controlled by a corrupt government. He broadcasts himself discussing events from the past which lead to the destruction of a country’s freedom and persuades most of the population that they need to gain back control. He convinces the common man that everyone has been under constant oppression for too long and to gather in a year’s time to take back their home. He speaks of retribution. Of overthrowing a government that was meant to save its people, but in the end only wanted to take full and complete control.

V has many great quotes in this film and he brings attention to the controlling government that ideas, while they do not appear threatening, are unbeatable. That the people just needed someone to start the fire, and that they would graciously follow.

“Beneath this mask there is more than flesh. Beneath this mask there is an idea, Mr. Creedy. And ideas are bulletproof.”
