During class today when we went into small groups to discuss the acts of chivalry and courtly love, we came to the conclusion that the rules consisting in the text about chivalry and courtly love were very contradicting. When reading the acts of chivalry two of the rules that I found opposed to the story of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight was the fact of “exhibiting self–control” whilst trying to “be respectful of host, women, and honor.”

Gawain showed amazing self-control by being able to resist the sexual advances of the host’s wife and being able to maintain a respectable distance to prevent temptation. Although during this difficult endeavor, Gawain had to keep his word to the Green Knight while also being able to uphold the rules of chivalry and continue to be respectful to the host’s wife and the host’s honor. The rules of courtly love state that “A true lover does not desire to embrace in love anyone except his beloved.” So this applies to the fact that Gawain does not want to stray from his wife’s arms and into the clutches of another man’s wife and betray the oath that knights have to swear to.

I think for how much he went through and how physically and mentally exhausted he was, resisting temptation as strong and persistent as that is pretty great. It’s almost impossible to abide by these rules seeing as how they have a lot of contradictions but Gawain does a phenomenal job

I think Gawain had a very difficult task and through all of his exhaustion he still made the correct decisions and upheld his chivalry values. Resisting temptation is a very hard thing to do but he did it in a very polite manner.
