iPhone Interface Design

With Edward Tufte’s video, there was one phrase that stuck out to me: that clutter is not so much a wealth of information as it is a failure of design. You can have all the information in the world, but if it is not laid out well, then it doesn’t mean squat.

And wouldn’t you know it, the iPhone does have almost all the information one could ever ask for at one’s finger tips. This makes it extremely important that the iPhone and this wealth of information is easily navigable then, because if the information is hard to reach, how many people will actually bother to use it?

Maybe it’s because I’ve grown used to it from being Team iPhone for around five-six years now, but I love most everything about the iPhone and its setup. It seems perfectly easy to navigate (even my mother, who I love dearly, can navigate her iPhone well, and she is not the most technically-savvy person in the world, per say) and allows to access any app with relative ease. I love the way that photos were available to look at in the original iPhone, so it was a nice walk down memory lane (Lord that feels weird to say about that) to see that again. I think the new photo viewing on iPhones is too clunky personally and something that Mr. Tufte would have ripped apart if he did a video for the iPhone’s new iOs.

It was odd for me to see him talk about two of the apps I use the least on the iPhone for part of the video: the stocks app (not big into stocks yet) and the weather app (that’s what I have the Weather Channel app for). I do agree with Mr. Tufte’s assessment of the stocks app though: it does seem a little bare and that much more could’ve been done with it. As for the weather app, I’m not as big a fan of it as he is. I think that the Weather Channel app does a better job of giving similar information in a more exciting way, but hey, that’s just me.

I’ll end this post by saying this: is there any way we can Mr. Tufte to do a video on the new iOs of the iPhone and/or comparing and contrasting the iPhone vs. Android vs. Galaxy? I would love to hear his opinions on those subjects.
