It’s important to understand artist and artistic movements as we dive into the world of graphic design and develop into one day considering ourselves as experts in the school of visual media upon graduation. By having a background of understanding surrounding those who have paved the field historically, bringing new artistic movements and formats into the public eye, we can see the progression of thought and also understand how various elements are represented in our everyday lives. Every field has a foundation of knowledge on which to build, just like a medical professional needs to learn and understand anatomy and cell structure before moving onto creating ground breaking advances in disease and ailment cures, those in the visual design world need to understand the building blocks of what makes great design, who the experts in the field are, and how best to build off of the foundation they have provided. By viewing art work and maintaining a critical eye to one’s surroundings in everyday life as well as researching others who have made inspiring work and understanding where their inspiration came from, and what motivations were behind that work, one can not only better appreciate great art work when it comes along, but also utilize it to inspire creativity for one’s own great piece.
