Meh, art…

Despite my title, I do believe that art matters for us as visual media students. Digital design, typography, graphic design, and web design are all extensions of art. The knowledge of the different styles of art can allow us to create our own ideas and utilize some of the principles and apply them digitally. Understanding the effect color, shape, composition or a lack thereof can have on someone experiencing your work is valuable to us as we create our own ideas.

I think of some of the greatest filmmakers. Many of them studied the greats that came before them but then eventually developed their own style. Studying film in undergrad, I had to learn to appreciate different ways of creating moving images and the more I watched the wider variety of genres I exposed myself to, the more I was able to develop my own style. I was able to discern what I liked, what I didn’t like and actually activated my creativity.

I think the best way to continuously stay inspired is by seeking out different forms of art constantly. If it means visiting art exhibitions, creating your own art and maybe just see where a google search of “expressionism” takes you. Constantly exposing yourself to new art and what’s “fresh” will help you stay on top of what’s popular and how to create work that your clients would appreciate.
