Who You Callin’ a Bitch…

This is probably the strangest descriptions of hypertext that I have ever read. I’m still not quite sure what it is that I read. One thing is that it was certainly interesting.

Mary Jackson, Shelley Jackson, Shelley Shelley, Mary Shelly or whoever the author believes herself to be never quite got to the point to me. Her descriptions of hypertext were a bit confusing and it took me three pages to get an inkling that she was describing the computer tool defined as:

“a software system that links topics on the screen to related information and graphics, which are typically accessed by a point-and-click method.”

Her descriptions are sometimes odd and instead of making the concept of hypertext clearer it makes it far more complicated. It is evident that she can skillfully manipulate language, however, does she truly get her message across to her intended audience? No.

Admittedly, there were a few times her description of hypertext seemed to be have potential. When she began describing the body and how not all parts of the body are controlled by our conscious it seemed that she could be triangulating her point but her verbal GPS just kept making wrong turns. It eventually led to this wonderful excerpt:

“In the no-place of hypertext, there’s finally room to move around, like an orifice I can fit my whole body into, instead of just my finger or my p-p-p-pen.”

At this point point, I had to reassure myself that I was hopefully reading something that would enrich me in some way. I’ve yet to feel enriched. I have a myriad of emotions but mostly just confusion.

There were so many ways this imaginative writer could have used her skills to make hypertext interesting. Instead, she made it slightly weird and a bit confusing. If I were technologically inept I do believe I would have a hard time determining that this article was about hypertext and not a dream concocted by a crazed fan of hypertext.
