Photo of J.E. Danieley. For anyone who has attended an Elon basketball game in Alumni Gym, they have heard the famous, “Dr. Danieley” cheer. The students start the chant, and across the court in the balcony Dr. J. Earl Danieley rises from his seat and he waves his rally towel. Then the entire stadium erupts in applause.

This description helps to show how much Danieley has been an iconic figure at Elon for more than six decades. This week he will be the latest person to be honored as part of Elon University’s Founders Day celebration.

The first Founders Day celebration was held Sept. 14, 1939 as a way for Elon College to commemorate its first 50 years of existence.

Last year, Elon chose to honor Isabella Walton Cannon, who graduated from Elon in 1924 and has given back to the University in a number of ways prior to her death in 2002. The Isabella Cannon Centre for International Studies and the Isabella Cannon Pavilion in the Academic Village were both named after her.

This year, Danieley will be the first living honoree of Founders Day. He graduated from Elon in 1946, was the Dean of Elon College from 1953-1956 and served as President of Elon College from 1957-1973. Since he stepped down as President, he has continued to remain a prominent fixture at the University and continues to teach chemistry.
