Student publications on campus

Throughout its rich history, there have been a number of firsts that have and also continue to take place on Elon University’s campus. The Elon College Monthly was the first student publication established on Elon’s campus with the first issue of the publication printed in June of 1891. This was a joint enterprise of the three literary societies (Clio, Philologian, and Psiphelian) on campus.

The publication usually contained 25 or more pages and was seven by eleven inches in size. Issues were filled with articles and personal items written by students and included a few advertisements. Some articles that were written in the publication included: “The Prisons of North Carolina,” “Should Women Be Allowed Suffrage,” and “College Athletics.” In 1894, a special issue was published by the female students. The publication was on printed through 1896 and then it was discontinued for reasons still unknown.
Following the Elon College Monthly, the yearbook, Phi Psi Cli, was the next student publication to appear on campus. The first edition was in 1913. In 1920, the Maroon and Gold, was published. This was the first student newspaper at Elon. Later in 1974, the first edition of The Pendulum was published, which is still the student newspaper on campus. The first student literary magazine, Colonnades, was printed in 1937 and is still printed annually.
