We\u2019ve had over 500 respondents to-date, and yes, we know it\u2019s not a statistically viable sample just yet, but nevertheless we\u2019re seeing some fascinating trends already beginning to emerge.<\/p>\n<p>At this point, though, we need to pause and answer what is apparently a burning question in the minds of many: Who should take this survey? Or, put another way, who do we want to hear from?<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ve tweeted us, DM\u2019d us, emailed us, Facebooked us, biting your bottom lips, voices wavering\u2026 wondering if\u2026 is it really\u2026 <i>for you?!<\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.elon.edu\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/313\/files\/2014\/03\/angst.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-36 aligncenter\" alt=\"Should I take the humanitarian worker survey?! (hint: <strong>yes<\/strong>)<\/em><\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The answer is, \u201cYes!\u201d If you do now or have ever worked in the aid industry, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.surveymonkey.com\/s\/R6GC3RJ\">we want to hear from you via this survey.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Yep, we know. It says \u201chumanitarian\u201d, but you\u2019ve always fancied yourself as a <i>development<\/i> worker. No short-term, all-output-no-impact, disaster zone adrenaline junkie shenanigans for you. The decades-long debates about \u201caid\u201d and \u201cdevelopment\u201d begin to coalesce in your mind. <i>Should you take the survey?<\/i><\/p>\n<p><strong>Yes.<\/strong> If you do now or have ever worked in the aid industry in any way, whether relief, development, advocacy, policy, shuffling papers, managing spreadsheets\u2026 aid industry? Yes? <a href=\"https:\/\/www.surveymonkey.com\/s\/R6GC3RJ\">Then yes, we want to hear from you.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Or maybe you\u2019re hung up on the fact that we appear to be asking about NGO staff only, and you\u2019re a consultant or maybe you work for an institutional donor (we\u2019ve updated a few of those questions, by the way). <i>Should you take the survey?<\/i><\/p>\n<p><strong>Yes.<\/strong> If you do now or have ever worked in the aid industry in any way, whether NGO, INGO, <a href=\"http:\/\/stuffexpataidworkerslike.com\/2011\/03\/23\/37-sexy-local-ngos-slongos\/\">SLONGO<\/a>, MONGO, BINGO, employed by a donor organization or institution, or as a <a href=\"http:\/\/handrelief.blogspot.com\/2011\/08\/letter-to-our-donor.html\">HRI-style reasonably-paid consultant<\/a>, then yes. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.surveymonkey.com\/s\/R6GC3RJ\">We want to hear from you!<\/a><\/p>\n<p>My personal favorite (see my prior rants <a href=\"http:\/\/aidspeak.wordpress.com\/2014\/01\/07\/the-myth-of-the-field\/\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/aidspeak.wordpress.com\/2014\/01\/19\/why-expats\/\">here<\/a>) is when some of you worry aloud over the fact that you sit in a HQ, far from the action, providing passive \u201csupport,\u201d while the alleged real work is being done by the alleged real aid workers far, far away. <i>Should you take the survey?<\/i><\/p>\n<p><strong>Yes!<\/strong> If you do now, or have ever worked in the aid industry, whether in DC or Dhaka, Brussels or Bujumbura, Geneva or Genoa\u2026 Whether your job is something about shuffling papers, responding to donor information needs, making operational decisions, directly handing relief NFIs to survivors, attending meetings, attending really important and high-level meetings\u2026 Then yes, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.surveymonkey.com\/s\/R6GC3RJ\">we want to hear from you.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The same goes for all the other permutations, too. You retired years ago. You\u2019re super angry. You\u2019re super happy. You\u2019re expat. You\u2019re local. You\u2019re too busy for blogs. You\u2019re an expert in surveys and you have serious concerns about the assumptions being made by some of these questions. You\u2019re in \u2018transition\u2019 work, and so neither really relief nor development. Your job is highly specialized. Your job is very general. You\u2019re very senior in your organization. You\u2019re very junior in your organization. <i>Should you take the survey?<\/i><\/p>\n<p><strong>Yes.<\/strong> If you do now, or have ever worked in the aid industry\u2026.<\/p>\n<p><em>You get the point.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.surveymonkey.com\/s\/R6GC3RJ\">Just take the survey.
