{"id":304,"date":"2015-10-06T10:14:55","date_gmt":"2015-10-06T14:14:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.elon.edu\/aidworkervoices\/?p=304"},"modified":"2017-11-05T09:40:10","modified_gmt":"2017-11-05T14:40:10","slug":"would-you-recommend-your-line-of-work-to-young-people-in-your-life","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.elon.edu\/aidworkervoices\/?p=304","title":{"rendered":"Would you recommend this line of work to young people in your life?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Would you recommend this\u00a0line of work to young people in your life?<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.elon.edu\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/313\/files\/2015\/10\/imagesKunduz.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-306\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.elon.edu\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/313\/files\/2015\/10\/imagesKunduz.jpg\" alt=\"imagesKunduz\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" \/><\/a>To state the obvious, being an aid worker can be dangerous physically and mentally; many deployments can be existentially challenging in all senses. \u00a0The career trajectory of an aid worker can generate hinderances\u00a0to &#8216;normal&#8217; home and family life. \u00a0For many aid workers, the early career bloom of idealism soon\u00a0withers and turns into rock-hard realism and even cynicism.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, being an aid worker ain&#8217;t no walk in the park.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<p>Given the nature of this line of work, the responses to Q39 are very interesting and perhaps speak to the deep conviction of many aid workers that what they do is valuable and meaningful.\u00a0 We asked, &#8220;If someone you are close to (a child or mentee) wanted to become a humanitarian aid worker, would you encourage him\/her, or would you try to discourage him\/her?&#8221; and the response was overwhelmingly &#8216;yes!&#8217; \u00a0If you combine the &#8216;Strongly encourage&#8217; and &#8216;Encourage with qualifications&#8217; you get a rousing 92% affirming that they would recommend to youngsters that they should become humanitarian aid workers. \u00a0That there\u00a0were no significant differences between the responses of males or females is at least mildly surprising.
