Wireless network available for smart TVs and more
Earlier this month,
Instructional & Campus Technologies launched the new elonu-connect wireless network at Elon University. This wireless network is designed for connecting smart TVs, gaming systems, wireless printers and other devices. Read on to learn how to connect your devices, and why you may want to reconsider using a wireless printer.
What is the elonu-connect network?
The elonu-connect network is designed specifically for devices that only prompt for passwords when connecting to the internet (unlike smartphones or laptops, which accept usernames and passwords). Common devices include Apple TVs, Chromecast, Roku, PS4s, Xbox, and wireless printers. Users may connect up to five (10) devices on elonu-connect. Afterwards, you will need to remove old devices in order to add new ones. Further, the devices will remain active on the network for one (1) year, before needing to be registered again.
How do I connect?
You can learn how to connect to elonu-connect by following the documentation on our Technology Wiki. You must first register the device on http://mydevices.elon.edu. Please note that after registering your device, it may take up to 15 minutes before it will connect to the network.
What do I need?
In order to connect your device, you’ll need to know the device’s MAC or Wi-Fi address. The placement of this information varies by device, but is commonly found on the packaging the device came with, or by navigating to the device’s Settings page. Due to the wide variety of devices available, if you need help locating your MAC or Wi-Fi address, try googling “locating a MAC (or Wi-Fi) address for (insert device name here).”
Wireless printers
While wireless printers are capable of connecting to elonu-connect, it is recommended that users continue to connect to wireless printers via USB cable. If you do connect a wireless printer to the network, you should only leave the printer powered on while in use. Otherwise, other users in the area may be able to see your printer and print documents to your device. There is no way to prevent this behavior.
