Syncplicity for faculty

Posted on: March 19, 2014 | By: Ryan Gay | Filed under: Tech Tips

Instructional & Campus Technologies (ICT) is deploying Syncplicit51iBTzOU6pL._SL500_AA300_.pngy, a new tool that provides you with an automatic method for backing up your Elon-related data to the cloud. Once Syncplicity is installed and your files are added, it takes care of everything else for you. So, if you’re working on a document or spreadsheet and save changes, Syncplicity will take care of making sure the file is backed up with the appropriate changes. So far, the feedback from staff has been overwhelmingly positive. They have enjoyed the simplicity the program offers, as well as the versatility to share files and access work from off-campus. The next phase of rollout begins this week and covers faculty throughout the university. But what will the rollout look like for faculty?

What actions are required of you?

ICT will email faculty members with links to instructions on the Technology Wiki. These links will walk you through the process of installing and configuring Syncplicity on your Elon-owned computer. Don’t worry! The process is incredibly easy and tends to take no more than five minutes to get started.

Once you have Syncplicity installed on your computer, several locations will be backed up by default: your desktop, My Documents, and your Favorites folder. But, you can also add what you want to Syncplicity by right-clicking the file, scrolling to Syncplicity, and choosing ‘Add to Syncplicity.’

What Syncplicity means for you

It’s important to know that Syncplicity will now become your tool for backing up all your Elon-related data. You should not back up data such as personal photos or music. In instances of computer crashes or re-imaging, Campus Technology Support will only be responsible for restoring data located in your Syncplicity account. There are also a few other highlights to Syncplicity:

  • Each faculty member receives 25GB of storage
  • Ability to connect to Syncplicity using your Elon email user name and password
  • Data stored in Syncplicity is secure and HIPAA/FERPA compliant
  • Access your files with the Syncplicity mobile app for iOS and Android devices (free download).
  • Use the Syncplicity web interface to view, download, and manage data from other computers

Please remember that in instances of computer crashes or re-imaging, please know that Campus Technology Support will only be responsible for restoring data located in your Syncplicity account. Learn more about Syncplicity in the Technology Wiki. Please contact the Technology Help Desk at 278-5200 if you have questions or problems during the installation process.
