DataPrivacyMonth-500pxHappy data privacy day!  Last week I asked you to think about what data privacy means to you.  This week’s focus will be on privacy settings.  How many times have you seen a check box saying you have read and understand how your information will be used when downloading an app or software?  Did you really scroll through and read all of it?  Let’s be honest.  We quickly check the box to start the downloading process.  All of the data breaches mentioned in the news lately should make us think more about our privacy so this week take  some time to read how services and devices you use protect your privacy.  Click here to view privacy settings for several popular services.

Tips to protect privacy

1.  Be mindful of the information you share online.

2.  Only share information to authorized people.  If in doubt, don’t give it out.

3.  Limit the amount of information you carry with you, especially on your devices.

4.  Lock your devices when they are not in use and make sure they are password-protected.

5.  Only make online purchases from reputable companies.

6.  Position yourself so that no one can see you enter confidential information like passwords or credit card numbers.
