At several southeast universities, including Florida State University, University of Florida, Auburn University, University of Alabama, and LSU, over 70 college girls pledging sororities have reported being targeted by a Facebook scam. They get a Facebook message from an older sorority sister offering to help the pledge, but the other person isn’t really a sorority sister. What starts as a normal conversation usually ends with nude photos, threats of violence, and personal secrets revealed. Blackboard Learn Upgrade: Blogs, Wikis, and Journals

Posted on: November 22, 2010 | By: Scott Hildebrand | Filed under: Tech Tips

This week’s topic highlights the addition of blogs, wikis, and journals in the new Blackboard Learn. When used together, these tools allow students collaborate, share information with their classmates, and post private information seen only by the instructor. Learn more about each tool below and how you can integrate them into your course. Blackboard Blogs A blog is a collaborative collection of information, similar to an online discussion board. Collaboration occurs as entries from multiple people collect in one place, but each participant’s entry is only editable by that person. “What we did / will do in class” – created by the instructor, but students can comment. If a classroom activity isn’t tied to a particular assignment, this can be a simple way to have your students hand in their work…

Get legal with image search

Posted on: November 16, 2010 | By: Scott Hildebrand | Filed under: Instructional Technologies

NspireD2 by Chris Clark Cathy Schulz, my colleague in the OpenCourseware project, works hard to guarantee that materials she publishes online are legal to share. For example, faculty members send her images they use in the classroom, where fair use applies. Before an image can be shared with the world, though, Cathy has to find out who owns it. That can be very tricky when the instructor can’t remember where they got the image – or when the “source” has used someone else’s image without permission. Fewer Clicks Everywhere Users will enjoy using fewer clicks to navigate the system and complete tasks. Reorganization of Course Management Actions Course Management features, such as the Control Panel and action bars, have been re-organized to align with the day-to-day tasks performed by instructors, increasing efficiency and becoming more task-appropriate. Company accused of firing over facebook post

Posted on: November 9, 2010 | By: Kelly Reimer | Filed under: Tech Tips

“In what labor officials and lawyers view as a ground-breaking case involving workers and social media, the National Labor Relations Board has accused a company of illegally firing an employee after she criticized her supervisor on her Facebook page. This is the first case in which the labor board has stepped in to argue that workers’ criticisms of their bosses or companies on a social networking site are generally a protected activity and that employers would be violating the law by punishing workers for such statements.” Read more of this article by Steven Greenhouse from The New York Times.
