Elon Periclean Scholars

2015 Haiti Class Notes 5/7

As our class forms key documents and searches for partnerships, we cannot limit ourselves by focusing solely on these two objectives. There are many more venues in which we could proceed, such as writing and sending letters to the appropriate organizations and government representatives. The US Ambassador to Haiti, for example. Building relationships in these areas would get our name and cause out to the appropriate audiences, help us find and form partnership organizations, and ultimately reach our goals regarding Restavek.

Now is a great time to reach out again to potential partnerships who may have fallen between the cracks as we focused on building a response template.

We updated our class resume, which has been posted.

Stephanie is beginning to form plans for starting an END IT movement on Elon’s campus. The organization’s mission is to end child slavery worldwide. Building this organization on Elon’s campus would be a great and very well-fit opportunity for our class. Their website and the videos they have posted are excellent, we could definitely learn a thing or two about how to be effective at moving an audience into action. Here’s a link: http://enditmovement.com/

We WILL have class next Tuesday!

PSA About Slavery

Slavery still exists.

We want every man, woman and child to know that there are 27 million men, women and children, just like them, living in the shadows. Working as slaves. In 161 countries. Including our own. Let’s shine a light on slavery and END IT.

Visit enditmovement.com, to watch the video, take the pledge and then pass it on. Let’s make FREEDOM go viral!

This is an organization that works with universities to bring awareness about slavery and human trafficking. In class today, we researched their website and are discussing bringing this movement to campus.

2013 Class Notes – Monday, May 6

1. Leaders of the 21st Century organizer, Kevin Otos, came to brainstorm and give us some tips:
-What do we want the audience to walk away with?
-How many people do we want to present?
-Celebration of our accomplishments, our opportunity to share with the audience
-Mission of the Periclean program
-Potential approach: our journey through Periclean
-Went over logistics: how to hold microphone, how to avoid pauses, “um”s, etc.

2. Evan Small also came to class, representing Elon Volunteers! (EV) in hopes of collaborating with Periclean for sustaining our program with the women.
-He sees it being a collaboration among Periclean, EV, and El Centro de Espanol (great way for students to get hours at El Centro!)
-We emphasized that consistency of Elon students is important for trust, continuity, and growth. Plus it helps break down the wall between Burlington and the “Elon Bubble”
-He seems hopeful and will be getting back to us soon

3. We are having our LAST class at Alex Lake’s house next week. We’ll have a cookout and hang out and also discuss our class resume as well as how we want to use our time on stage for Leaders.

4. Our class had planned to have a tailgate Wednesday, May 8 and then go to the baseball game with the session women. However, the game was cancelled, leading us to quickly brainstorm an alternative in class last night. It was a great example of the constant changes and curve balls that come along with the program! After some stressful scrambling, we secured El Centro for the evening, where we will have a make-your-own-pizza night and games. There are quite a few 2016’s joining us so they can meet the women. We’re looking forward to it!

Update from Annie Huth ’12 about CRHP about construction

Update and pictures from Annie at CRHP regarding the construction:
Now that the funds have been received from the city of Izmir, Turkey, we’re planning to start construction on Monday after consulting with the engineering and construction team. CRHP’s new Preventive Health Training Center will be a huge step forward for Izmir and CRHP‘s common goal of Health for All, allowing grassroots workers, students, doctors and development professionals from around the globe to receive training in the principles of preventive care and community organization. While the cost of building materials has gone up because of the severe drought, the construction will also serve as an opportunity for drought relief by providing a consistent daily wage to around 15 local laborers who are unemployed this drought season. We’ll keep everyone posted on the building’s progress as construction moves along!

Alumni NEWS!!! Please read all the way down….

Several exciting news updates:

First, this from Sam White, Class of ’06 [focus on HIV/AIDS in Namibia:

Greetings friends,

I hope this message finds you well! I have some fun news to share on the job front…IMG_1164

I was selected as a 2013-2014 Global Health Corps Fellow and I will be moving to Malawi in July! I’ll be working as monitoring and evaluation fellow with the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation. The fellowship is one year and I think it will be an awesome
opportunity for me to get some hands-on experience in the field.

I will likely start up a blog for those interested in following along with me on this journey – more info on that in the coming months. In the meantime, I wanted to let you know of my upcoming move. Yay!

 Cheers,

Sam

Next, an update from Jenn Pierson, also Class of ’06:

Here are the major details of my placement in Namibia:

“Greetings from Windhoek! I hope your preparations for your time in Namibia are coming together well.
After much consideration, I have decided to place you at Omatjete Primary School. Omatjete is a large

DSCF0094
rural village located one hour north of the large town of Omaruru in the Erongo Region. Transportation
can be irregular, but it is generally not too difficult to get to Omaruru. Omaruru is a nice town, a bit
smaller than the other major towns throughout Namibia, but with a very nice grocery store and most
anything you would need and can’t find in the small shops of Omatjete. I am not as familiar with Erongo
as I am with the Ohangwena Region in the north, but believe Omaruru to be a more diverse town,
surrounded by very similar villages compared to the north. Most rural residents are subsistence farmers
from the Herero tribe and speak Otjiherero.

At Omatjete you will be teaching primarily English but may also teach some non-promotional subjects like
Art and Basic Information Science (BIS, basically library/basic computing). The grades of your classes will
vary between grades 5 and 7.

Finally, and in some ways the most exciting, Annie Huth, ’12, passed on the news that this morning that USD $60,000 has arrived in the CRHP for use in building a new health training facility on the CRHP campus.  Annie is the inaugural Elon Fellow for CRHP, an initiative of the Class of 2012.  Annie will be updating us with reports and photos of the build in process.  These funds are from the World Expo2020 IzmirCommittee in Izmir, Turkey and is one part of their commitment to “Health for All.”  Here is the video that was screened as part of their presentation to the BIE in Paris last November.

Not dishwasher friendly, but the logo is still vibrant

Just in case you were wondering, the water bottles we handed out at Induction are decidedly not dishwasher friendly.
