NC Afterschool Corps – ServiceYear Positions

The NC Afterschool Corps is a team of AmeriCorps VISTA members who serve with a college or community-based organization to build the capacity of afterschool programs that serve low-income children and families. The NC Afterschool Corps is a project of North Carolina Campus Compact. We are currently recruiting candidates to serve in one-year, full-time placements at selected sites across the state.

NC Afterschool Corps members will work to recruit and train afterschool volunteers, increase funding and resources to these programs, and expand local awareness of the value of afterschool. Corps members will also enhance civic and community engagement by implementing “Design for Change” afterschool programming, a project-based, service-learning curriculum that empowers young people to solve local problems through design-thinking and action.

Candidates must be able to attend an in-person Pre-Service Orientation July 16-19 in Orlando, FL. (Travel & expenses will be paid by AmeriCorps VISTA.) The official first day of service will be July 20, 2018. The year-long service term will end on July 19, 2019.

ELIGIBILITY:

  • Must be at least 18 years-old.
  • Hold one of the following citizenship statuses: US citizen, US National, Lawful Permanent Resident Aliens and persons residing in a state that have the following legal residency classifications: refugee, asylum or asylee, temporary protected status, or deferred action for childhood arrivals (DACA) status.
  • Ability to serve FULL-TIME for ONE YEAR term of service.
  • Pass a national service criminal history check (upon selection)
  • Bachelor’s degree from four-year institution strongly desired; 2-year degree and relevant experience will be considered.
  • All sites seek candidates with following skills/experience:
    • Demonstrated passion for youth development
    • Experience working or volunteering in afterschool setting
    • Experience working or volunteering with low-income children and families
    • Strong written and oral communication skills
    • Proven leadership and project management skills, especially in college campus service programs.
  • Some sites seek candidates with specialized skills/background, including:
    • Spanish language skills/fluency or Spanish/English bilingual
    • Math or literacy tutoring experience
    • Fundraising and/or grant-writing experience

MEMBER DUTIES:

  • Assess community and agency needs and identify assets
  • Recruit and train volunteers, especially college student volunteers
  • Develop systems for volunteer coordination
  • Create policies and procedures that increase agency effectiveness
  • Support citizen and student leadership and participation in service
  • Seek new resources through fund-raising and grant-writing
  • Facilitate service-learning placements, community-based research, and co-curricular opportunities that support communities
  • Create publicity and outreach materials
  • Coordinate afterschool awareness events and national day of service events
  • Promote AmeriCorps, VISTA, and national service

BENEFITS:

Our Corps members receive the same benefits as other AmeriCorps VISTA members serving in NC:

  • Living allowance (also called a living stipend) of $33.73/day, paid bi-weekly (~ $472 every 2 weeks = ~ $12,300/year, pre-tax)
  • Choice of $5,920 Segal Education award OR $1800 end of service bonus, earned upon completion of your service year
  • Student loan forbearance or deferrement, if eligible, and payment of accrued interest during service, if eligible
  • Healthcare benefits (not health insurance) learn more
  • Non-competitive eligiblity (NCE), which coveys special hiring status when you apply for federal jobs after your service year
  • Relocation assistance, childcare assistance, and travel reimbursement, if eligble
  • Orientation and in-service training
