Associate Director, Carolina Center for Public Service, UNC-Chapel Hill

POSITION
Associate director at the Carolina Center for Public Service (CCPS) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

CCPS is a pan-university center reporting to the Office of the Provost. The mission of CCPS is to engage and support the faculty, students and staff of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in meeting the needs of North Carolina and beyond. The Center strengthens the University’s public service commitment by promoting scholarship and service that are responsive to the concerns of the state and contribute to the common good. The position is classified as EHRA non-faculty and reports to the director of the Center.

RESPONSIBILITIES
The associate director assists the director with the establishment and fulfillment of the mission, goals and day-to-day operation of the Center and is responsible for all facets of the Center in the absence of the director. The associate director works closely with the director and staff colleagues to carry out the principal functions of the Center and these essential responsibilities: 1) administration, 2) evaluation and assessment, and 3) campus, community and national engagement.

Primary areas of responsibility include:
Administration and supervision: (40%)
• Serve as Center liaison to campus offices and provide day-to-day oversight for human resource, budget and accounting functions;
• Work with director to support process and implementation of strategic planning and to ensure effective day-to-day operations of all Center activities;
• Provide guidance and supervision to Center staff as assigned;
• Facilitate staff development activities;
• Lead administrative team and program team meetings and co-lead staff meetings;
• Convene and plan agendas for meetings of the Center’s advisory board;
• Coordinate courses and instructors associated with Center programming;
• Provide needed information and support to Center’s development efforts through gifts, grants and other fund-raising; and
• Assume additional responsibilities as needed which may include aspects of other programs; representation of the Center at University, community and national committees and events; promotion of additional effective public service activities; and further development of Center activities.

Evaluation and assessment: (40%)
• Provide leadership and oversight of on-going assessment and evaluation of CCPS programs, both individually and collectively, including development and dissemination of evaluation research around student civic engagement and engaged scholarship;
• Apply assessment and evaluation findings to develop and improve programs, including working with staff and student organizers who plan, implement and evaluate various programs.
• Respond to various requests and reporting requirements for accountability, accreditation and recognition purposes; and
• Work with other campus partners, including institutional research, to develop institutional measures and metrics as needed.
Campus, community and national engagement: (20%)
• Work with director and board to design and implement campus programming and activities in support of engagement and engaged scholarship, particularly in regard to the Carolina Engagement Council and Engagement Units Summit;
• Provide organizational support to campus-wide programs and collaborations around engaged teaching, research and service;
• Maintain and cultivate partnerships and relationships with community organizations that support the Center’s activities around engaged scholarship and service; and
• Represent the Center at community and University functions and regional and national meetings as needed

QUALIFICATIONS:
• Master’s degree required in related field, doctorate preferred
• Minimum of seven years of progressive experience with growing responsibilities related to program planning, management and evaluation; supervision; engaged research and teaching
• Outstanding administrative skills, including organizational planning and development
• Knowledge of current practices and trends in engaged scholarship and faculty development in higher education
• Documented skills in program planning and assessment, applied research and evaluation, including both quantitative and qualitative methods
• Ability to independently plan, manage and meet deadlines for multiple projects with minimal supervision and a positive attitude
• Ability to work well with Center constituencies including faculty, staff, administrators, students and community representatives
• Excellent written and oral communication skills as well as attention to detail and demonstrated experience working as an effective team member
• Flexible, adaptable and skilled at balancing multiple tasks and working well under pressure
• Established commitment to public service and engagement
